saw my PCP

She thinks the issue with my cycle is probably a side effect of Abilify, which I started a month ago.  Told me it may also cause milk production.  Um... lovely, huh?  She said as long as it remains light so there is no danger of anemia, it's an annoyance but not something serious.  I am supposed to go back if I'm still having any bleeding in another month.  Great.  And my psychiatrist doubled my dose of Abilify yesterday.

She felt it was quite appropriate that I saw her for this issue instead of going to a gynecologist and shook her head when I told her about the receptionist.  She also wrote me a script for Mirilax and gave me an order for labs next months.  I mentioned that last time the order had the wrong vitamin D test and she looked in the computer (does your doc carry around a laptop now?) and made the correction - she is now using the list I gave her with all her RNY patients, so they were all getting the wrong D test but now will be getting the correct one.  Have I mentioned I love my PCP?  Even though she could use a new receptionist.

I don't know about you, but I feel such a sense of relief on your behalf!  Sometimes life is such a battle to get through!

Have a wonderful day!

I'm relieved it's probably nothing serious but annoyed at the thought of being on my period for who knows how much longer.  And if I start producing milk, I will be coming off this med!  I am not walking around dribbling milk and I am not buying nursing pads, either!

Hope you are feeling better Kelly......BTW...do you have any biological kids....After my 10th child, my breast would not stop lactating and this was before RNY....I had seen an Endocrinologist and they did an MRI and blood test and found that my pituitary gland and its hormone levels were out of whack.

I can't remember these little white pills I had to take but it started with a letter "C"....anyway eventually the lactating stopped and my pituitary gland was fine...I have now been put back on antidepressants......I will start Monday on Effexor...have you ever tried this one post-op....I am just freaking out about medicinal weight gain because I had it with Celexa...I have heard of Abilify...Is that the anti-depressant that docs add to your regular anti-depressant as a supplement with the cute lil commerical...I know I'm weird but it is a lady with a depressed cloud always following her around?

I'm not lactating.  She just said it could cause that.

I am on Effexor, have been for a long time.  It has not caused any post op weight gain.  Back in the summer I started another med with it, notryptiline and I did gain a few pounds then.  But not too much.   Not everyone has that side effect, so try  not to worry unless you actually experience it.

Abilify is actually an atypical antipsychotic but they use it to augment antidepressant therapy as well as to treat psychosis - I have never been psychotic.  I'm not sure what the commercial looks like, I don't ever watch TV.  I watch stuff online, but you get minimal commercials that way.

Oh Thanks Kelly, I am so freaked out about gaining weight from medicines but I know I need it, My Xanax I know is only a band-aid....do you mind if I ask you how much you take daily and how often....I was told to take 75mg 1x day for 2 days and then 75 mg 2x a day...does that seem average for starters?

I know everyone is different but I have that kind of body that whatever a medicine is suppose to do it will do and whatever problem is wrong with my bosy it is good at letting me know immediately with symptoms.....I am so glad I have you for support.  I am going to hold my head up and try to be back here on OH more often especially after I start the new anti-depressant.  I have been so down lately.....

and the holidays especially CHRISTMAS, I actually can't wait to see it come and go!

I take 75 mg four times a day.  But 75 mg twice a day is a normal dose.  Mine is kinda high, but I used to be on 450 mg a day total.  But that is higher than many docs will even prescribe.  Effexor is the best antidepressant I've ever been on.  Little side effects (for me) and actually seems to help.  One thing to make sure of with Effexor, is if you have to stop taking it, don't do it all at once.  You need to come off it slowly or you can have horrible withdrawal.

Thanks Kelly!.....love you......I will make sure to follow those instructions because I admit I have a habit of not taking my meds properly or just stopping them cold turkey...

I won't lie I still suffer with all the post-RNY requirements daily....vitamins, iron, calcium, protein, biotin, d3, magnesium, just alot of extra stuff besides the multi-vitamins to keep me healthy....This may have contributed to my fall back into depression...the weight loss has stopped, and now that I am further out I have realized what I have REALLY committed myself to regarding my health and it is scary, ya know!

I admit...after having all my kids and then becoming sick with co-morbidities after the last baby and carrying around 10 pounds of unloss weight after each pregnancy and a couple miscarriages and eating whatever the hell I wanted.  I just wanted by slim body back.  And I have bad genes...My whole family is fat and diabetics and they are squishy and soft and my DH sister had 6 babies before she was murdered and her body use to just snap back like a rubber band

sorry I am dumping on you Kelly but these past 3 years I have gotten to know you as a good friend here and I just want to say thank you if no one ever has to you for always reaching out to us here, sharing your information even though you face your own struggles and I really appreciate it.  I have no friends here in ATL, hell did not have any in Chi-town either after marriage so I just want to say you are truly appreciated and everything I see you post is not in vain, I do appreciate you....THANK YOU VERY MUCH. and if I do not be back on for a while.....Happy Holidays!

Definitely don't stop taking it cold turkey.  I once had to do that - it's a long boring story as to why - and I was so, so miserable.  All my joints and muscles ached so bad just getting in and out of the car was extremely difficult.  I was nauseous constantly.  I was dizzy and had crying spells all the time.  But the pain is what I remember the most and it lasted for several weeks.  And I was lucky, I guess, because withdrawal from Effexor can cause seizures but that at least did not happen to me.

I wish they would explain to patients when they start take Effexor what can happen if they stop taking it suddenly.  I'd been told that you shouldn't do that but had not been told what would happen if I did.  You have to cut it down gradually, like you would go from 75 mg twice a day to 75 mg once a day, and then maybe half of that once a day, taking each lower dose for a week or more before going lower.

I'll be honest, sometimes I struggle with getting all the vitamins in, too.  And you know I know how important they are!  That doesn't make it easy or fun to have to take a million of them a day.

Is your B12 low, by any chance?  If that one you've had trouble being consistent with?  Because low B12 will cause depression.
