Guess what I learned?

Someone with reactive hypoglycemia should not eat tortilla chips for dinner.  Even if they are the really yummy "hint of lime" ones.

OK, no one should eat tortilla chips for dinner.  Even if they are too tired to cook.

And someone that has a hard time eating starchy carbs in moderation should not even have a bag of tortilla chips in the house, especially the really yummy "hint of lime" ones.

Because what happens when someone with reactive hypoglycemia eats tortilla chips for dinner?  blood sugar of 51 is what happens.  Duh.

I hear you Kelly. My weakness is chips and I don't want them around period.
I have had RH once, and it was on cherry pie filling that had too much sugar.
Curiously I didn't dump, but I sure got RH- down to 40's. I'll never do that
again!  But I'm willing to bet I could get there on chips....so I try to keep
them out of the house or if family gets them, they are ordered to eat
them up. Hint of lime you say?  Ohhhhh...double evil.

I don't buy them and prefer to keep them out of the house.  But I sent my partner to the grocery store a couple days ago when I wasn't feeling very well.

And, one protein bar later, my sugar is 143.  And I could check it easily since my hands were no longer shaking so hard.

so are you saying your sugars dropped to really low from eating chips?  or was it that you didn't eat protein?  i am not sure what hypoglycemia is and i suppose i could look it up beings i am on a computer and have google   but i guess what i am asking is what do you do about it?  how do you know you have it?  did you always have it?  I remember checking my sugars on my dad's meter and sometimes i was really low..in the 60's but i usually felt fine and strangely was a coca cola classic drinker at the time.  lol just me being dumb... ha.

You're not being dumb at all.

Hypoglycemia is low blood sugar.  Hypo means low, glycemia is sugar.  By the way, hyper means high, so if I said I had hyperglycemia, that would mean I had high blood sugar.

Eating simple carbs can cause your sugar to spike, then crash.  That's what mine does.  If I eat some protein with the carbs, it does not do that.

As far as what to do about it, what I should do, and usually do, is not eat a bunch of simple carbs, especially with no protein.  When I do have an episode of hypoglycemia, I eat something with a little sugar and a good amount of protein.  Like a protein bar.

I did not always have this, it's a common thing that happens a couple years out from RNY for some reason.  Reactive hypoglycemia.  The only way to know for sure you have it is to check your glucose level with a glucometer, but I can tell now when it's happening because I feel really shaky, my hands do shake, I feel kind of ill, dizzy, weak.  And food fixes it.

Glad you've come back around. That is an absolutely awful feeling.
I may put Mr. Yuck stickers on any chips that I see around. They're
sure poison to me.

When I want something crunchy like tortilla chips, I try to find some with a protein content that will help offset the carbs. For instance, I found Trader Joe's Soy and Flaxseed Tortilla Chips and they have 6 grams of protein in a serving as well as a decent amount of fiber. That's pretty decent, so I use them when I want a tortilla chip.
