called to make appt with PCP

I agree w/ Rebecca...why is a receptionist making a medical referral for you?  I doubt she has any medical training and she is most likely not qualified to make referrals to specialists.  Some insurance companies require a referral to a specialist before covering visits.  What if you had gone in to see the gyn and it was not covered?  I also think I would call back and insist on an appointment w/ my PCP.

My insurance doesn't require a referral, but you  make a good point.  The receptionist didn't know that.

I have had my PCP do my pap smear and annual stuff like that.  Any PCP should be able to do that.  If the problem is something serious or difficult to diagnose and treat I might need to see a specialist, but it's probably minor and she would be able to handle it just fine.  Besides all the other reasons I'd rather see her, isn't it a waste of money (including money from the insurance company) to see a specialist for something a PCP could easily do?

When I call to schedule an appt with my pcp they always ask me the reason. I was told it was so they would know how much time to block me out for so that they didn't get overbooked. I love my pcp and never have to wait for more than five minutes after my appt time. So she may be instructed to ask, tho I agree she had to right to refer you to someone else.

I would call back and tell her you need to be scheduled for several reasons and list one or two. You need not tell her everything. Speak to you pcp also and let him know that you were referred without seeing her by the receptionist. Mine would be very upset.

I hope it all goes well for you. If you do have to see a gyn I hope you find one that is sensitive to your needs. I haven't found one yet and my pcp is male and I don't feel comfortable with him doing my pap etc. So I haven't had one in many many years. I know thats bad, but it is what it is. Until I find a gyn i'm comfortable with i'll keep going the way I am. This is something that is very important to me.

It's been two years since I had that stuff done.  I do not do it as often as I should.  I understand why but with the PTSD the stress it causes me just doesn't seem worth it sometimes.  I feel the same way about the dentist.  It's been about six years since I've seen a dentist.

(In my opinion) you should call your pcp back and make appt for "sick visit" - hell tell them you have a cold .. once you get in there to your appt you need to inform your dr what happened as well as what you had to go thru to get in to her - Ill bet she has no clue her receptionist is referring pts elsewhere and will sort it (and you/your medical problems) out!

I'm gonna call tomorrow.  I think I'll say it's a "stomach problem."  Thanks.

Good luck tomorrow!!!

While I understand the receptionists needs to know a basic amount, to know how long to schedule the appt for, I have NEVER felt comfortable telling them over the phone. Not their business and I don't trust their confidentiality.

I hope you are able to smoothly get an appointment tomorrow!
