called to make appt with PCP

I called this afternoon to make an appt with my PCP about my wacky menstrual cycle and the recpetionist didn't want to make an appt for me.  She wanted to refer me to a gynecologist instead and gave me a phone number.  I realize it may be something I need a gyn for.  But I would rather see my PCP.  I know her.  How do I know I'll like the gyn?  I don't even know if the number she gave me is for a woman or a man.  I don't feel real comfortable seeing a man for that.  But I really don't want to see a stranger for it at all.

You know, I'm picky about my doctors.  I prefer to interview them before I decide to hire them.  But I think I need to see someone for this issue kind of soon.  Plus I have PTSD and that makes going to the gyn very difficult for me.

I'm not happy now.  I guess I need to call and make an appt with the new doc but I don't want to.

How Frustrating!!!!!

Call back and schedule a consult apointment. When the receptionist asks what for state you'd rather discuss with your doctor. You can explain everything that is going on with your PCP and let them decide if they want to refer you out. It is not the business of the receptionist as to the nature of your apointment if they are not trying to squeeze you in same day.

I used to work as a Medical Assistant in an OB/GYN office and currently work in insurance. You can schedule your appointment without full disclosure.

Good Luck either way.

I was thinking of maybe doing that.  Plus, I need to see her anyway to get orders for labs and a bone density scan.  I was wondering how much of a hard time the receptionist would give me if I didn't tell her what I wanted to be seen for, though.

You could always ask the receptionist if she feels qualified to be signed on as one of your HIPA recipients... if not, you need to discuss your needs with your physician.

Yeah, I'm feeling bratty today.  Best of luck with it - she really is putting you between a rock and a hard place.

I totally understand how you feel. My daughter has PTSD and we have to be careful with any new providers especially male doctors. I would call back and make an appointment and just mention one of your concerns and not the mentrual cycle. You do not have to tell her all of your reasons for seeing your doctor.

If you do end up having to go to a gyn, I would suggest asking people you know for their recommendations...female relatives, coworkers, etc.

Hope things get better for you!

If it were me, I would call back and insist on scheduling an appointment with your PCP (although it might be a little uncomfortable, either tell the receptionist why and insist on an appointment, or use the other issues you mentioned to get scheduled)... and then if your PCP wants you to see a gynecologist, you could at least see if your PCP can suggest a female doctor that she knows/believes would be sensitive to the PTSD (I learned the hard way that not alll female OB/GYNs are sensitive about PTSD issues).   I had to switch gynecologists after my assault.

Yeah, I realize not all female gyns would be sensitive to those issues.  and some male docs might be really sensitive, but I wouldn't feel comfortable anyway with a man.  I think asking my PCP for a referral would be a good idea, though.

I don't want to sound like the raging ***** I really am (lol), but I hate when people overstep their job titles or qualifications... MAJOR pet peeve of mine...Just call back get an appt for your labs, once you get there ask her about your menstrual cycle, that is when SHE can decide if she is not qualified to address your issues and recommend someone who can!!  I am confident she is capable of determining this herself...
