B vitamins can be confusing because there are a bunch of them.  They each have a number, like B1, B2, B3, etc but they have names, too.  For instance, B7 is commonly called biotin.  Can you name the number that goes with each of the B vitamins below?

Niacin

Pantothenic acid

Riboflavin

Thiamine

Cobalamin

Folate

Which B vitamin should women take extra of if they are trying to conceive?

What are common symptoms of thiamine deficiency?

What are common symptoms of folate deficiency?

What are common symptoms of B12 deficiency?

What were your thiamine, folate and B12 levels last time you had labs done?  (If you don’t know, call your doc for a copy of your lab report to find out.  And if you haven’t had these tested, add them to the list of labs to request next time you get labs done!)

What are common symptoms of thiamine deficiency?  It is thought that many people with diabetes  have a deficiency of thiamine and that this may be linked to some of the complications that can occur.Well-known syndromes caused by thiamine deficiency include beriberi and Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, diseases also common with chronic alcoholism.
What are common symptoms of folate deficiency? A lack of dietary folic acid leads to folate deficiency which is uncommon in normal Western diets.  A complete lack of dietary folate takes months before deficiency develops as normal individuals have about 500–20,000 µg of folate in body stores. This deficiency can result in many health problems, the most notable one being neural tube defects in developing embryos. Common symptoms of folate deficiency include diarrhea, macrocytic anemia with weakness or shortness of breath, nerve damage with weakness and limb numbness (peripheral neuropathy), pregnancy complications, mental confusion, forgetfulness or other cognitive declines, mental depression, sore or swollen tongue, peptic or mouth ulcers, headaches, heart palpitations, irritability, and behavioral disorders. Low levels of folate can also lead to homocysteine accumulation. DNA synthesis and repair are impaired and this could lead to cancer development.

What are common symptoms of B12 deficiency? Vitamin B12 deficiency can potentially cause severe and irreversible damage, especially to the brain and nervous system. At levels only slightly lower than normal, a range of symptoms such as fatigue, depression, and poor memory may be experienced. However, these symptoms by themselves are too nonspecific to diagnose deficiency of the vitamin. Vitamin B12 deficiency can also cause symptoms of mania and psychosis
