question about that time of the month - TMI

This is probably one for the ladies, but men, you're welcome to read about my female bodily functions too if you want.  Don't know why you would, but I don't care if you do.  I'm not particularly shy about bodily functions, as you may have noticed.  I mean, we all have them.  Men don't have this one, but... OK, I'll get to the point.

I have been on my period for almost two weeks now.  And it's a weird one, compared to usual.  typically my periods last about five days, they are fairy heaving the first three days, then light the last two.  Sometimes I have mild cramps the first day.  That's it.

I'm pretty regular.  This one started on time, but was much lighter than  normal.  The whole time it's been the way I typically am on the last day or two.  I had horribly painful cramps for the first four days.  And now it's almost two weeks and I am still having light bleeding.

Any ideas what might cause this?  Do I need to see my doctor?  I probably do, and it's almost time to get labs done again so I could go ahead and get an order for those while I'm there, but anybody got any ideas?  I am not on birth control of any kind and there is no chance I could be pregnant.

Have you added or changed any prescription medication?

Abilify.  Started about three weeks ago.  I did not see anything like this listed on the package insert, though.

Could be peri-menopause, which for me kicked in in my 30s.  Could be a hormone shift or imbalance.  Could just be an unexpected reaction to meds change, even if not usual.  Could be your body's reaction to sleep deprivation.  Not to scare you, but could be something as serious as cancer (which I had and survived).  Obviously, it could be a lot of things.  Yes, you need to see your doctor just to be safe.  It's likely not serious, but why take any chances?

why take any chances?  Um... wanna hear my long list of excuses?

I doubt it's a reaction to sleep deprivation because I've been sleep deprived most of my life.  But I guess it could be the change in meds and of course it could be something much more serious.  I'll call my doc and make an appointment next week.  Thanks.

Hi Kelly,

I had the same thing happen to me.  I had to go on these shots 1x a month, started with the letter L, this put my overaries to sleep for 1 yr and I did not have my cycle.  When the shots were done, 2 weeks later my cycle came back with a vengence and the pain was worse, so my doctor said, well lets try burning the lunung of the uterus, *can't remember the exact medical name for it*  Well after all that failed, I ended up having a hystorectomy, the endometrous was so bad, I had so much scaring of the uturus, so maybe your overies are sticking to the scar tissue and this is what causes the horrible pain and the bleeding for some reason keeps on coming.  I do not know if this is the same thing you have, but your story reminded me of my journey thru that part of my life.  However I would check with my GYN to make sure everything is A-OK!

Take Care,

Deb

I don't have a gynecologist, I see my PCP for my annual pap smear (which I do not actually get done annually like I should) and that sort of thing.  I'm going to try to make an appointment for next week and she can refer me to a gynecologist if she thinks it's necessary.  I'd love something that meant I wouldn't have a cycle!

I agree you need to make a Dr. appt.  I personally began doing that and just dismissed it as peri-menopausal.  When I finally did go in for my check I had a tumor.  Not cancer or anything like that but the tumor had to be removed and the bleeding then stopped.

On Monday you need to make that appointment.  Probably nothing but better to know for sure!
