Endoscopy- An endoscopy is a procedure where a Dr. puts an endoscope down your throat. It takes about 20 minutes depending on your situation. This allows your Dr. to view video images. You may receive a sedative, anesthetic and wear a mouth piece to keep your mouth open. Gentle air may be used to inflate the digestive tract to get a better view.
Stoma- A stoma in relation to RNY is the opening between the pouch and small intestine
Duodenum- The duodenum is the first part of the small intestine after the pyloric valve. It is bypassed in RNY.
NG tube- An NG tube is a nasogastric tube that is inserted by the nose down the throat into the stomach [pouch]. It is used for continious feeding.
NSAIDS- NSAID means Non-steroidal anti-inflamitory drug. It is a drug that is a non-narcotic analgesic. RNY post-ops should not take these because of risk of ulcers.
Foley catheter- A Foley catheter is a thin, sterile tube inserted into your bladder to drain urine. I think it depends on the Dr. whether or not you wake up with one from surgery. [I hope i dont]
JP drain A Jackson Pratt Drain is a bulb drain used to pull excess fluid from the body after surgery. It consists of an internal drainage tube with an external bulb which holds the fluid.
Resting metabolic rate (RMR)- The calories you burn while at rest.
Ketosis- If diet is changed from a high carbohydrate diet to a low carb diet, the body goes through a set of stages to enter ketosis. After about 48 hours of this process, the brain starts burning ketones to more directly use the energy from the fat stores that are being depended upon, and to reserve the glucose only for its absolute needs, avoiding the depletion of the body's protein store in the muscles. [Im still learning about this one]
Excess weight- Subtract goal weight from starting weight = excess weight
BMI- Body Mass Index. Measure of body fat based on height and weight
Stricture- http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/rny/4295173/Do-all-new-RNY-patients-know-what-a-stricture-is-A-repost/ When the opening between the pouch and the small intestine heal and the scar tissue leaves a very small or no opening for food or even liquid to go through
