when you get your labs done...

Just wanted to post a couple reminders about getting your labs done (which you should be getting done once or twice a year, after the first year, and more often the first year).

Reminder #1: Docs  have different lists of labs they routinely order and many don't order all the things you might want done or all the things that RNY patients often develop deficiencies in.  If your PCP is ordering labs for you, they often don't know what to order unless you take them a list.  But you can always look at the order to see what's being tested and request additional tests if desired.  If they are taking less than about 15 or 16 tubes of blood, they aren't testing everything I think they should be (and that some other very well-informed people, including vitalady, think they should be testing).

Reminder #2: Ask for a copy of your lab report so you can see your results for yourself.

The most they've taken from is is about 6 tubes of blood...

Then they are not testing for very many things.  You may end up with some deficiencies and not know it.

There is no hard and fast answer to that question.  The ASMBS has not published a list, as far as I know, like they have with vitamins.  I'll share the list i get done.  Vitalady also has a list, either on her website or you can email her for it, which I think is similar to mine.  You might need other things done as well as what I get, like if you've had thyroid problems you'd need that checked.

Here is my list:

CMP
Lipid Profile
CBC with differential
B12
Bili-direct
Ferritin

Iron/TIBC

PTH
Magnesium
Folate
Thiamine (B1)

B6

Vitamin E

Vitamin K
Uric Acid
Vitamin A

Vitamin D (25 hydroxy)

Zinc
Phosphorus
Copper

Selenium

Prealbumin

We need vitamin K checked because we don't absorb it very well after surgery since part of the small intestine has been bypassed.  It's not one of the most common deficiencies but it's not real rare in RNY patients, either.

I think bili-direct has to do with the liver but I am not sure.  I'll have to look that up.

Sorry, missed the uric acid part of your question.  I'm guessing many docs recommend testing that because of the risk of kidney stones.  I'm not sure that we are at any greater risk for gout than anyone else.  You're asking good questions.

High protein diets can result in “uric acid” kidney stones. Uric acid is a byproduct of  processing protein in your body. If the urine acid crystallizes in your urine, you end up with this type of stone. Uric acid is also responsible for “gout“, which is the deposit of uric acid crystals in the joints – most commonly the big toes. Obviously rich foods, high in sugar, alcohol, animal fats, meat and fish proteins contribute to uric acid output.WLS patients generally eat high protein diets, but should not be eating high quantities of sugar or alcohol. Everyone can minimize uric stone formation through diet and drinking plenty of fluids.
