my insurance required a 3 month supervised diet.  It actually was a good thing for me.  It gave me a chance to prove to myself I was going to be able to make the lifestyle changes.  I lost about 22 lbs in those 3 months.  Then they submitted my paperwork and I was approved within 4 days.  Then the 10 day pre op diet and now I am 10 days post op.

I don't know if you can get around that requirement.  Use the time to get in a little better shape for a hard surgery and start moving forward.

Good luck to you!

My insurance also required a six month supervised program.  I really enjoyed the meeting with the Dr and NUT.  They taught me all about foods and vitamins.  I also had to attend classes about nutrition and how to decarb, etc.

If a six month supervised diet is one of the requirements for surgery and you have not fulfilled that requirement, you will be denied.  Most do require some sort of diet.  I had 2 optons....3 month diet supervised by a doctor with visits to a nutritionist and having a physical trainer.  Or, 6 months supervised diet with my doctor.  I chose the 6 months.  With both I needed 2 year history and approval by a psychologist and vists with a nutritionist.   I was told if I missed one appointment weigh-in, I would be denied so it was very important to meet with my PCP each month.  In hind sight, I needed the 6 months to educate myself, get my comorbidities under control and prepare myself mentally.  For the most part, there is simply no way around the process.

Why is a 6-month supervised diet "crazy"??? MANY people have to do a 6 month surpevised diet because the insurance company requires it of EVERYONE before they will approve the surgery.

If they said it was not medically necessary, have you checked to see what their criteria is for approving surgery?  Do you need the criteria (usually a combination of being a certain number of pounds overweight, a certain BMI, or a certain number of health problems, or a combination of weight and health problems)?  If you don't meet the criteria, they are under no obligation to approve the surgery; if you DO meet the medical criteria, though, they are obligated to approve it IF you jump through the necessary hoops (like the 6 month diet) that are required to get approval.  If youa re not willing to do your part, they don;t have to approve it.
