2. f our vitamin D level is really low, should we take the prescription vitamin D? Explain why or why not.
3. Which vitamin D test do we need when we get our labs done, Vitamin D 25 Hydroxy or Vitamin D 1,25 Dihydroxy?
4. What should our vitamin D level be?

6. What is dry vitamin D and why is it important that we get it dry?
And hey, if anyone has ideas for future quizzes, share those, too!

Looking forward in learning what my body needs.
I try to get as much from my food as I can but still need supplements and protein drinks to make sure I'm doing my body good. I've met so many people losing their hair or tired because they aren't keping up with vitamins. I want to be skinny but want to feel energetic and healthy more.
Thanks for all your help Kelly!

2. Nope, Rx D is D2 and our bodies do not absorb that form of vit. D.
3. Eek...ashamed to admit that after almost three years I do not know the answer to this one!
4. Around 80+ would be optimum.
5. Several symptoms can occur, including increased physical pain, depression, calcium is not absorbed as well, increased risk of cardiovascular disease, increased risk of cancers, phosphorus levels decline and I am sure the list goes on and on. I attended a presentation by Dr Gregory Plotnikoff, director of Abbott's Institute for Health and Healing. He is a HUGE advocate for checking D levels in patients w/ a variety of symptoms and reversing the symptoms by simply increasing D levels. Interesting stuff.
6. Our bodies malabsorb fats so vit D that is suspended in oil does not absorb.
I have a theory that the reason vitamin D deficiency is so common in the general population (not just RNY folks) is a combination of factors. One might be the fact that people don't often spend much time outdoors these days, but even those that do, have deficiencies. I suspect all the air pollution somehow has an effect on it. And I suspect that the over-processing of animal products, which are supposed to be the highest in vitamin D, diminishes the vitamin D in them. I'd love to talk to a doctor or someone in a position to know more about it, though.
You got all these right other than number three. The reason I included that question is because last time I had labs done, my doc ordered the wrong one. If we don't know which one we need, we won't know if they are ordering the wrong thing. And that can make a big difference when it comes to understand our results.

1. What type of vitamin D do we need, D2 or D3? Why?
D3! No idea why.
2. f our vitamin D level is really low, should we take the prescription vitamin D? Explain why or why not.
No. That's the green gel cappy thing we can't absorb. I had it out with my surgeon about that and he relented and allowed me to get a higher dose dry piill.
3. Which vitamin D test do we need when we get our labs done, Vitamin D 25 Hydroxy or Vitamin D 1,25 Dihydroxy?
HUH?
4. What should our vitamin D level be?
I think the baseline is something like 35. Mine is routinely around 17 unless I take my 50k IU a day.
5. What happens if our vitamin D level gets too low?
I don't know what happens for YOU, but I get terrible muscle spasms in my feet. That's how I know to get it checked.
6. What is dry vitamin D and why is it important that we get it dry?
It's a pill like any other dry pill as opposed to a gel cap. Again, I am fuzzy on why (I THOUGHT I knew and proclaimed it in public and was dead wrong so now I don't proclaim to know anymore).
RNY Gastric Bypass 1-8-08 350/327/200 (HW/SW/CW). I spend most of my time playing with my food over at Bariatric Foodie - check me out!
2.I just went to Endocronologist this AM he is thinking about putting me on a liquid one (waiting for labs first) because my last lab was a 4.
3. not sure which one my gastric dr. does usually, but he is doing both this time
4.between 90-100?
5. osteoarthritis, tired. I don't know what else but my TEETH are killing ! (he said calcium is leaking out of them)
6. don't know
2. f our vitamin D level is really low, should we take the prescription vitamin D? Explain why or why not. No. The prescriptions are always D2 (even if your doctor WRITES D3 on the script)
3. Which vitamin D test do we need when we get our labs done, Vitamin D 25 Hydroxy or Vitamin D 1,25 Dihydroxy? ACK!! I have no idea...
4. What should our vitamin D level be? *shrug*
5. What happens if our vitamin D level gets too low? We can't properly absorb calcium.. so we end up leeching from our bones. (right?)
6. What is dry vitamin D and why is it important that we get it dry? Dry is.. well, dry. We don't absorb oil well, so the oil filled caplets won't do us much good.
Good grief.. just when I thought I was well educated you go and show me that I'm not. *sigh* MORE RESEARCH!!
