Vitamin B12 Quiz

Here’s today’s quiz.  I’m thinking this is a pretty easy one.

We can take B12 by sublingual, nasal spray or injection.  Why can’t we take a chewable or a pill we swallow?

How much B12 does the ASMBS say we need if we use a sublingual (unless of course our labs show we need more)?

How much B12 does the ASMBS say we need if we do injections (unless of course our labs show we need more)?

What is a good B12 level do look for when we have labs done?

What are three symptoms of B12 deficiency?

1. Because of bypassing the small intestines, we don't have the appropriate factor/ability to absorb that way anymore.

2. 300-500mcg

3. 1000mcg/month

4. i'm not sure.  I'm thinking min of 80, but i might be getting that confused with something else.

5. fatigue, depression, nerve issues

You are getting it confused with vitamin D, which we want to be at least 80.  You're on target with your other answers, though.

Actually it's the lower part of the stomach bypass that causes this.  We lack the contact with intrinsic factor found in that area to process b12 from food or pills.

350-500 mcg DAILY

1000 mcg every MONTH

at least 1000 but up to 2000 is fine

numbness/tingling in fingers and toes, balance disturbances, dementia

We can take B12 by sublingual, nasal spray or injection. Why can’t we take a chewable or a pill we swallow?

B12 must bind with intrinsic factor (IF), which is secreted in the greater curvature of the stomach.  Food no longer comes in contact with the IF, because that portion of the stomach is bypassed with the creation of the pouch.

How much B12 does the ASMBS say we need if we use a sublingual (unless of course our labs show we need more)?

350-500mcg/day via sublingual

How much B12 does the ASMBS say we need if we do injections (unless of course our labs show we need more)?

1000mcg/month via subcutaneous injection

What is a good B12 level do look for when we have labs done?

Well, we know you know the answer.

Do you have an opinion about whether we should do injections sub-q or IM?

I think the best answer is do the one that works for you.  In the beginning, I was so diligent about my supplements.  I still do a GREAT job on the pills, but I have found myself "forgetting" the B12 sublinguals.

I am seriously considering the injections.  My insurance won't pay for them, but they are cheap enough that I would not have a problem paying out of pocket.

I don't think I am up to the task of self injecting, but I'm sure I could get one of my coworkers to do it for me.
