Labs on Friday

So this Friday I have labs first thing in the morning. I'm a little more than frustrated because he always seems to draw when I'm on my period...usually right around or just after the really heavy days. My iron is always low.

I thought I was being all smart scheduling before I started my cycle and wouldn't you know it....it's moved a week. I swear I can't win.

I don't know what to do to improve my iron levels, other than what I'm doing now. I take chewables with iron in them and the Bariatric Advantage iron chewables (my wls doctor insisted on them).

Being on your period shouldn't make your iron that low.  If it's super low when you're on your period, then it must be low the rest of the time too.

How much iron are you getting total?  Are you taking it with vitamin C?  At least two hours away from calcium?

I wasn't told to do vitamin C or calcium.

I'm taking chewable multi vitamin with iron
29 mg of Bariatric Advantage iron
Plus B12, B complex, Vitamin D3

The vitamin C just helps you absorb iron better.  You need 200 mg C for every 30 mg iron.

But you're not taking calcium?  Um, you want to have bones and teeth in a couple years, right?  And you understand how our lack of stomach acid on top of our bypassed duodenum makes it very hard to get enough calcium from foods we eat?

I'll talk to the doctor about the calcium on Friday. But I wasn't told at any point during the last six months to take a calcium supplment. So I haven't. Same with the vitamin C.

I'm sure Kelly will respond again to you. She's a great resource. We are supposed to take in at least 1500mg of Calcium Citrate a day. Extremely important!

All I can say is, lots of us take things we were never told to take.  We take them because we do our homework and we track our labs and we take the things we need regardless of whether or not someone tells us to.  If I only took what my surgeon told me to take, I would have a vitamin D deficiency, an iron deficiency, osteoporosis (or at least well on my way there) and possibly a B12 deficiency.  Or, and vitamin A and zinc deficiencies.  Seriously.
