OT - if someone gave you a million dollars

I found this little activity in some book years ago and I did it then and found it really interesting and meaningful and just fun.  Something reminded me of it today and I'm gonna do it again.

Here's what you do.  Imagine someone gives you a million dollars.  But you can't spend it on anything for yourself.  You have to give it all away.  You can give it to anyone you want, divide it up any way you want.  You can give it to individuals, to organizations, whatever you want.  So get a piece of paper and a pen and start figuring out how you'd give away a million dollars.

I'll post mine once I do it.

Can I split it up and give some to a mortgage company, some to a travel agency, some to a car dealership..... yeah, that's probably cheating, huh?

Well, you can't give it to them to pay off your bills... but if you just wanna give the car dealership on the corner some money 'cause they are good people and need it, I guess you can do that.

This is easy since my sister and I fantasize about winning the lottery when its really big. I already know who I'm giving money to if I ever do win.

I would give 250K to my dad, 250K to my sister, 250K to my son and then I would donate the remaining 250K to my favorite non profit, National Council For Adoption.

If I can't keep it then it looks like my kids will be getting $200,000.00 each.

Scholarships. That much money would endow ten full scholarships.

OK, here's what I would do.

$100,000 to my sister

$300,000 in some sort of trust fund for my  nephew, who is very mentally ill and needs intensive treatment that he's not getting right now because no one can or will pay for it - it would just be for his treatment, not for him to go out and spend (he would spend it on drugs if he could)

$100,000 to this awesome no kill cat shelter in cincinnati

$300,000 to Forest View Hospital in Grand Rapids, which specializes in treating PTSD and other trauma related disorder, to help cover costs for people that can't afford the treatment they need

$100,000 to Planned Parenthood

$90,000 to the food pantry where a friend of mine works, to provide really healthy food to lots of families

$10,000 to some homeless guy on the street - just 'cause I always thought it would be so fun to give some homeless guy (or gal) a lot of money, which they totally wouldn't be expecting, and that could make a huge difference in their life - and yeah, I realize they could go blow it all on beer but when you give money away, you don't have much control over how people spend it and there would be the possibility of making a huge difference in someone's life

I work at a very poor school.  I would use the money to buy school supplies for my kids and give them everything they need for school.

I would also use it to buy them jackets because it seems that is the one piece of clothing they all lack.  As the weather gets colder and colder I feel so bad for them.  Some even wear blankets around them to school because they have no jackets and then the stupid VP's tell them to put them away they are considered dress code!

I would also use the money to take my students on field trips to places they never get the chance to go.

Last week I had a donut party for one of my classes for doing well on an assessment.  A little 6th grader saved half his donut to take home to his mom.  I asked why he said "because we never get to have donuts, they are to expensive, so I want to share this treat with her"  Broke my heart.  I wanted to buy him a dozen donuts to take home!

How sweet is it that he wanted to share it with her?  She must be a great mom.  She's obviously taught him to think about other people and to share even when you don't have a lot.

OK, now I wanna buy them a dozen donuts.

If you private message me your address or the adress of your school and who the attn to should be, I would be more than happy to clean out my closets and send you some winter coats if that is allowed. I have 2 teenagers and 3 or 4 coats they have outgrown and I was gonna give them to goodwill anyway. What size kids do you teach?
