What dairy breed is YOUR cow?  Her breed depends on how much butterfat will be in the milk.

We've had Holsteins, but only one we milked.  I plan to get another one (a whole one) when I retire and am home more time.  I plan to get a Jersey next time because they have more butterfat - and the cream is the most delicious part.

Goats are good, Kelly - you'll need extra good fences.  I had goats once and they got out and ate the vinyl top off of my car - true story.  I like goats, though - they have interesting personalities.  My fences are built for cows not goats and at this stage of the game I'm getting too old to put up new fences.

You know what?  I didn't even ask what breed she was!  I will ask next week when I go out to the farm, though.  Guess I don't know much about buying a cow.

Goats aren't an option for me right now.  I wish I could get a couple goats and I think I'd like chickens, too.  But I live in a trailer park.  I bet there are rules against having farm animals in the park, but even if I was allowed, it's a very small lot.  I was told by one farmer that I could get a  miniature breed of goat and they wouldn't need much room, but I think they would need more than I have.  A dog bigger than a toy poodle would want more room than I have!

Coolness. I hope you enjoy it. I remember visiting my dads parents growing up, they raised cows and had fresh milk every morning. To be honest I hated the taste. Lol I would probably have a different opinion now.

I'll mostly be making yogurt and protein shakes with it and stuff like that, so I don't think it will matter to me much if I don't love the taste of it plain.  Or, and butter.  I'm making butter.  And I think it will be really yummy.

The taste is different for me too.  The taste can also change from time to time-- like if the farmer feeds  a certain kind of forage in the winter and a different kind in the summer.

Get it really cold and skim off the cream before  you take your first taste.

My sister also owns a share in a cow and loves her raw milk.  She has been doing this for a couple of years now and loves it.  I hope you do too
