that is the coolest thing ever!  I wonder if you can freeze it like you can with cheese. That way you can have some on hand.

We used to get raw milk when the kids were small.  I loved it but oh my is it rich.  I would get at least 1/2 cream and then even the rest of the milk was very high fat.  You may wish you had DS or really have to watch your fat intake.  A bowl of cereal with cream was heavenly, like having desert.  Brings back lots of good memories for sure.

Yogurt is easy.  cheese is more complicated.  butter is pretty easy too.  You will have fun.

I had researched getting raw milk locally too.  Unfortunately, there is nothing available locally.  I wanted it for making fresh mozzarella.  Also, just because I think it's a healthier option.  One of my best friends worked in a lab and she tested bacterial levels in milk.  There was one company that consistently had the cleanest milk.  Even though it is a little more expensive, they don't use growth hormones and their herds are far healthier... so, it's worth the extra cost.  Good luck with your raw milk adventure!

The cows are much healthier.  Once I started reading about the dairy cows in the factory farms, well, you can't tell me that milk from a sick cow is good for you.  One study found that something like 80% of the dairy cows had mastitis.  And they don't treat them for it.  As long as they still produce milk, they don't care if they are sick.  But icky stuff ends up in the milk and I don't wanna drink it.

Have you checked this website?  And it's actually legal to buy it in California!  www.realmilk.com/where1.html#ca

The problem is where I live.  I'm not close to any of the places that sell raw milk.  *sigh*  Maybe if I move further south in a few years I'll have better access!  We have a GREAT co-op in town, but they don't sell raw milk.

Strange little tidbit... milk production can be increased by giving the cows shallow water mattresses to sleep on.  I assume it works because it takes the pressure off the udder and allows it to get more full.  My parents made water mattresses for cows for this purpose (just one of many unusual products they've made over the years).  Unfortunately, though the research was favorable, it's not a strategy that is implemented.

That's fascinating!  Of course, then you have to keep your cows in stalls large enough for them to lie down in.

I used to have a water bed and one of my cats absolutely loved it.  She would just roll around on it playing by  herself.  The other cat hated it and would never get on there.
