time for another poll - weight and family history
No, both parents always thin.
2. Do you have any siblings, and if so, are they overweight?
My brother is thin ,and my sister has always been thin, but has put on weight in the last few years, she was around 190 lbs, but since I had RnY she has dropped to abot 175 lbs.
3. Do you think genetics played a part in your being overweight? Or do you think you learned poor eating habits from your parents? Or both? Or neither of those?
No, in my case I don't believe it is genetics. My grandma was overweight, and a few of my cousins, but not enough to say it is genetics really. I gained my weight after a serious jet ski accident in my 20's, had 4 kids and then another very serious car accident.
4. Do you have children, and if so, are they overweight?
I have four kids my 14 yr old is about 150 lbs and looks thin.(she about 5'6") My 12 yr old is thin, but has put a little bit of weight on because of puberty(about 130lbs), my son is 9 and thin (about 55/60) lbs, and my 8 yr old daughter is thin (about 45 lbs)
5. If they are overweight, do you think it's related to genetics? Or do you think they've learned poor eating habits from you? Or something else?
I have always stressed a very healthy/balenced diet for them, and they enjoy eating veg.
1. Were/are either or both of your parents overweight? Yes- Both
2. Do you have any siblings, and if so, are they overweight? 3 siblings-1 overweight
3. Do you think genetics played a part in your being overweight? Yes
Or do you think you learned poor eating habits from your parents? Yes
4. Do you have children, and if so, are they overweight? 1 child-Yes
5. If they are overweight, do you think it's related to genetics? Yes
Do you think they've learned poor eating habits from you? No-I raised my child with healthy eating habits so would not have weight issues like me
Or something else? Yes-Works long shifts and eats on the run
1. Were/are either or both of your parents overweight? I am the only person in my immediate and extended family that is overweight.
2. Do you have any siblings, and if so, are they overweight? see above
3. Do you think genetics played a part in your being overweight? Or do you think you learned poor eating habits from your parents? Or both? Or neither of those? Neither.
4. Do you have children, and if so, are they overweight? one daughter, slightly overweight
5. If they are overweight, do you think it's related to genetics? Or do you think they've learned poor eating habits from you? Or something else? it could be genetics. Or not. Her Dad and much of his family are overweight. She definitely learned some poor eating habits from me. Happily, as I clean up my act it is rubbing off on her and she has become conscious of her choices.
Slightly. I've got nurture and nature going on though. I was adopted at 2.5
Birth parents were not overweight until they ran into health problems later in life. Cancer, addiction, heart disease.
2. Do you have any siblings, and if so, are they overweight?
One bio sibling who is overweight, one sibling (my adoptive parents had one daughter/my sister) she is not overweight.
3. Do you think genetics played a part in your being overweight? Or do you think you learned poor eating habits from your parents? Or both? Or neither of those?
Both! It's nurture and nature in my life.
4. Do you have children, and if so, are they overweight? One daughter is slightly overweight, one was chronically underweight until about 3 years ago.
5. If they are overweight, do you think it's related to genetics? Or do you think they've learned poor eating habits from you? Or something else?
Not gentics, I now know better about food so I do better.
2. My brother, at his heaviest, was pudgy. Usually he's skinny. He has this animalistic ability to collect weight and drop it at will. But we have different fathers so...
3. I don't know if that's a determination any of us are qualified to make. There are heavy people in my family. My grandparents, aunts, etc. But I also think that my cultural eating habits played a big part too. The traditional foods of the African-American culture are high-fat, high sodium, lots of carbs and sugar. It's wonderful, but not very good for you and I was raised in it.
4. Both of my children are overweight. My youngest daughter is obese. My oldest, if her body would catch up to her boobs, would probably be just plain overweight.
5. Yes, genetics is probably behind it. They eat what I eat. I do not buy food I can't eat. That's the benefit of being a single mom. I am the boss!

1. Neither of my parents are overweight. However I was not overweight until after highschool when I started working office jobs and sitting on my butt for hours a day.
2. None of my siblings are overweight.
3. Genetics could play a part however as I was adopted and we don't know my genetic makeup. I do have PCOS and yes there is a hereditary issue there.
4. I do have children one is visibly overweight. My teenager just moved back in with us and he is working on his weight control and lowering his bloodsugar levels via diet and exercise. Both of my younger girls (4 and 5) are very active, muscular and look to be a normal weight however according to their BMI they are in the 85% percentile and on the verge of overweight. However these girls can pick up and carry their own body weight, run a mile, hike 4 miles in the mountains, etc. I'm not to worried about their weight at this point. They are mostly muscle.

2. Do you have any siblings, and if so, are they overweight? I have three half-siblings—one string bean, one who, like her mother could stand to lose 15 pounds, and my oldest brother who falls into the obese category.
3. Do you think genetics played a part in your being overweight? Or do you think you learned poor eating habits from your parents? Or both? Or neither of those? I was raised by my dad alone and we ate out a lot. I ate a lot of fruit but few veggies and you can just imagine the sodium, trans fats and simple carbs I consumed at restaurants growing up. My eating habits evolved though after I left home and I ate very healthfully but in large quantities. I was not obese until I had my son, at the age of 23. Before that, I was barely overweight. After his birth, I developed a metabolic disorder, Type II Diabetes and my “full button" stopped functioning. I think my genetics mutated and I developed a “fat gene". My endocrinologist supported that.
4. Do you have children, and if so, are they overweight? Three children—my oldest son is at a healthy weight, my daughter is obese (just but she is only 13), and my youngest is right in the middle. I can see chubby in his future if he ever stops moving!
5. If they are overweight, do you think it's related to genetics? Or do you think they've learned poor eating habits from you? Or something else? My daughter’s endocrinologist supports the idea of a fat gene that makes people more prone to metabolic disorders. His only competitive action, however, is to advise my daughter to move more, as she does not eat a lot. Neither my husband nor I can be blamed for anyone’s poor eating habits if you live in our house. :) You can’t learn that from us!
My mom was obese when I was young but in the last 10 years she has lost weight and has a normal BMI. My dad was always in shape but in the last couple of years his weight goes up and down. He is an alcoholic so it depends on what he is drinking or trying to stop drinking.
2. Do you have any siblings, and if so, are they overweight?
I have one sister who could loose 20 lbs...she would kill me if she knew I said that.
3. Do you think genetics played a part in your being overweight? Or do you think you learned poor eating habits from your parents? Or both? Or neither of those?
This is something that I have wondered for a long time. All of my Aunts on my mom side are at least a little over weight. SOme are obese. We are always getting together and sit around and eat! When I was young I remember always having cake, donuts, ice cream, etc in the house and eating alot of it without anyone stopping me. We always had dinner together...not always the best choices were made though.
4. Do you have children, and if so, are they overweight?
I have one son that is 4 years old. He is built exactly like his father. Athletic but can be chubby without any exercise.
5. If they are overweight, do you think it's related to genetics? Or do you think they've learned poor eating habits from you? Or something else?
I make sure that my son eats healthy but he is a child and I do allow him treats sometimes. He knows that he needs to exercise. He plays soccer and swims on a team. I keep him very active. He almost always asks for healthy things to eat. His favorite food is broccoli...ok I am done bragging...sorry!
2. Do you have any siblings, and if so, are they overweight? Yes I do! My full-blooded sister has never had a weight issue. My two half sisters were normal weight in high school, both now deal with some weight issues as they've gotten older and have had children.
3. Do you think genetics played a part in your being overweight? Or do you think you learned poor eating habits from your parents? Or both? Or neither of those? My paternal grandfather's family had obesity issues. I'm not sure if genetics had anything to do with my weight issues nor do I blame it on poor eating habits as I mentioned I'm the only one that has had to deal with obesity in my family.
4. Do you have children, and if so, are they overweight? My oldest could stand to lose a few lbs (less than 10) the youngest needs to gain some weight.
5. If they are overweight, do you think it's related to genetics? Or do you think they've learned poor eating habits from you? Or something else? Possibly some genetics will affect the boys since both myself and my ex-husband had weight issues. I do worry about them and try to stay on top of their weight and eating without being overbearing (I hated the comments I received from family in my youth). The one that needs to lose a few lbs is a carboholic which concerns me. I've discussed his eating with him and that I'm going to stop allowing many refined foods and snacks in the house.
