surgery date doubts & postponing

You do not need a last food hoorah.  I promise.  You're gonna be able to eat all kinds of good food after surgery.  Probably never again in the quantity you could eat now, but you'll be full and satisfied with smaller amounts.

Now, for the first couple months after surgery, your diet will be somewhat limited.  Even then, though, there are some very tasty things you can eat.  While you're still on full liquids, how does a pumpkin spice protein latte sound?  Or a frosty chocolate mocha protein shake?  Or mint chocolate protein ice cream?

Once you can have pureed foods, how does pumpkin cheesecake sound?  OK, it's not real cheesecake, it's Greek yogurt mixed with pureed pumpkin and sugar free cheesecake flavored pudding mix, but it tastes like cheesecake.  Or how about some noodleless lasagna?  Or Wendy's chili (gotta puree it first)?

And pretty soon you're be able to eat just about anything you like.  Some things you'll need to eat very small amounts of, or make a healthier version of, but you'll get to eat at least most of your old favorites again.  So no need for the last food hoorah.

If you're not ready for other reasons, then you should absolutely postpone.  But if it's just that you want the food hoorah, you don't need it.

Having second thoughts is perfectly normal but it's ok to ask to have your surgery posted a few weeks while you come to terms with this permanent change to your anatomy.  Maybe some counselling while you deal with things.

I just had my surgery this past Friday.  I have to be honest--it is not as bad as my mind thought it was going to be. One of my biggest pre-op fears was that I wouldn't know when to stop.  But only a few days out--I already know my limits and have become adjusted to how much--and how fast--I can eat.  I completely understand your fears . . . . I thought I had one more day to eat my "last meal"--but I had to start my liquid diet THAT day so I cried and mourned the loss of my last hamburger.  But--looking back, I wouldn't change it for the world.  My doctor said my liver shrank dramatically while on the diet and that helped my surgery go better and will continue helping me as I recover.  It is YOUR decicion to have your surgery when you want to . . . . but in my experience, it wasn't that bad and I hope and pray that yours (whenever it is) won't be too bad either.

Ultimately you need to be true to yourself in your decision and not worry about what others think or are saying.

I can tell you that my surgery was schedule VERY quickly and I wanted nothing more than to get up off the stretcher and run as they were wheeling me to surgery.  I am glad I didn't.  It was hard, but it gets easier very very quickly!  I am thrilled with my results and I feel freat!! I am only a little over 4 months out!

Hang in there...and know you may never feel 100% "ready"...it is a leap of faith...

thanks to everyone who took the time in replying, i relly appreciaate it! i think the hunger is driving to do stupid things. i picked up the phone early morning to postpone like i thought i would but i am just starring at it, not really having the nerve to do it. i'll just give it some time and do whats right for me.

You always need to do what is right for YOU. However, just keep in mind that you are not alone and nobody is judging you. If you didn't have last minute anxiety I would be worried! That's totally normal. Before I did my pre-op liquid diet I bought a lot of "last foods" to eat and was shocked when NONE of them tasted as good as I thought they were going to. I figured that so far in my life I have already had enough "last" burgers and sweets and candy and that's exactly why I ended up having the surgery. lol. Sometimes you need to feel the fear, and do it anyway. You don't have to let your feelings dictate your actions. I almost cancelled my surgery, but I figured I got so far in the process for a reason, reasons I thought were good enough to even begin the process, so I took a leap of faith and did it. It wasn't nearly as bad as I envisioned and things have just been getting better and better. Yesterday I ate my first soft boiled egg and it was the best egg I ever ate; far better than any burger. You'll be able to eat "normal" foods again, you just will have to wait a little while and for the rewards you'll get, a few months out of a lifetime is sure worth it!  Best of luck to you and please keep us informed of your progress! Take care.
