OT - question about eating meat

I eat meat because I crave it.  Probably eat more poultry then beef or pork and I also enjoy venison a lot and seafood.  I've never considered not eating meat, being from the south our meals even as children always included some sort of eat and BOTH rice and potatoes, yeah starch on starch.

I don't think about how animals are treated when it comes to eating meat.

I'm not trying to be snarky here, I'm really not.  But how do you not think about it?

I also grew up in a meat/potatoes family and there was beef, pork, or poultry on the table every night. But, I never really enjoyed beef or pork and would only eat it because it was expected of me.

For the last 20+ years,  the only time I eat beef or pork is when it is included in something (Wendy's chili or example) or when I am invited to someone's house. In other words, probably less than 4 servings a month. I think I have purchased beef or pork for myself less than 10 times in my adult life, with today being one of those occasions.  Every so often I have intense cravings, so I figure I must be deficient in something.  Of course, I never know how to cook the meat in question, which means it usually comes out tough and I feed it to my dogs. I'm curious as to how my pork experiment is going to go tonight.

I do think about the manner in which animals are treated, but since I purchase it so infrequently, I don't even know where I would find better options and researching that info would probably be a waste of time.

People are always shocked when they find out how little beef/pork I consume.  They don't know "how they would live on so little" of it.  But its not a hardship to me.  I prefer tofu, dairy, and beans.  Heck, I love to open a tofu container and eat it plain, although I try and limit my soy consumption.  My lack of desire for meat is one reason why I think the DS would not have been a good fit for me. It is hard for me to make my protein requirements on a daily basis; I have to rely on protein shakes/bars to do it.  Sometimes I wish that I did like meat more, as it might make that aspect of my RNY life easier.

Plain tofu?  I've tried to like tofu and I just can't.  I wish I liked it but no.

Preop, I would mix a little hoisin sauce and peanut butter as a dipping sauce for the tofu.  Now I eat it plain or with a bit of salsa.  I don't know why I enjoy it as much as I do.

My pork chop was a disaster; I think I cooked it too long and it did not set well with the pouch.  The dogs enjoyed it though.  And with that, my meat eating days will be over for awhile.

My parents were very into meat as the main course and then veggies and a starch as the sides.  So, the usual.. meatloaf, mashed potatoes and green beans or whatever.     It's just how I was raised.  I like chicken, beef, turkey and pork.  I am allergic to pretty much everything that lived in water, so no fish/shellfish.  My love of veggies is greater than my love of meat, but not by much.  I am a HUGE brussel sprout fan.. I could eat them every day.  The only veggies I don't eat are eggplant (not sure why that is, actually) and okra.
So, to answer your questions: It's what I've always eaten.  I like the taste.  I am sure I could get my protein in a different way.  I don't necessarily think it's healthier than a vegetarian diet.  I can't allow myself to think about how the animals are treated.  I have no excuse for that, other than if I watched one of those videos or put too much thought into it, it would depress the hell out of me and I am depressed enough already.  I am not sure I would give up eating meat, but I would feel guilty as hell every time I DID eat it.  I suppose I am somewhat shallow or self centered, but as much as I love animals, I can't do that to myself.  It's the one subject where I accept that "Ignorance is bliss".   Is that a correct way of thinking?  Probably not.  Seriously, though.. I can watch a sad movie and be depressed for days afterward... which is why I don'****ch sad movies very often.  I'm also sure that burying my head in the sand isn't the best way to deal with my depression issues... but, it works for me.  I NEVER read stories about child abuse (especially the ones where mothers actually murder their children).  I get depressed and actually suffer nightmares.  Ok.  So... yeah.  That's pretty much the long and short of it, I guess.

I think protecting yourself from seeing those things that depress you that much is a good idea.  I limit the things I watch or read related to child abuse, too.  I am very aware that it goes on, I'm not denying that reality, and I can quote some statistics on it, but I don't think I need to watch images that will cause me nightmares or just make me super stressed.

Have you thought about buying meat from someone that treats the animals humanely?  Then you wouldn't have to feel guilty every time you ate it.

If I could do vegan, I would because it fits with what I feel ethically. However, I LOVE meat - taste, smell, preparation..... So I try to meet an ethical compromise: buy local/organic/humane when I can and encourage others to do so too. I agree that the protein bang for the buck is part of my post-WLS considerations. And really, the taste of better-raised meat is worth the extra $$! Plus I'm a picky eater so really don't like alot of the other protein sources (beans, tofu, etc).

Veganism fits with what I feel ethically too, but I don't really see anything unethical about eating eggs or dairy from animals that are raised in a humane way.  I am buying eggs from a local farm now and the chickens are raised humanely and I feel really good about buying eggs there.  Unfortunately, I have not yet found a local farm where I can buy milk.  I've cut back on the amount of dairy I use but i'm still eating some cheese and yogurt.  I feel bad about it, but I guess not bad enough to stop eating it.

I know how most factory farmed meat is raised....Even when I was obese and ate at crappy places like McDonalds, etc.

I have been a carnavore all my life. It's a cultural thing. I am also VERY concerned about HUMANE treatment of animals to be eaten... (I HUNT too, venison and turkey and put it in my freezer...Yum!)

If you are respectful of the meat you eat (and I am an animal rescuer..Worked for years at a humane society and got pissed off at people) but if you are RESPECTFUL of your food...What is the problem?

I buy local eggs, chickens, beef, lamb, goat etc... I have slaughtered and dressed my own kills. Always I thank the animal for it's giving it's nourishment to us. What's wrong with eating meat? People are omnivores (like bears) we are meant to eat meat. (and veggies and whatever we can get).

Do I approve of factory farming? No!!!!! But that was not the question...I will ALWAYS eat my meat, and hunt, and use my local butcher. In fact, I am getting ready to raise my own chickens for eggs and meat,  I will be going 1/4 on a goat next week from a local meat goat farmer. they don't use antibiotics, steriods or other junk in the meat.  But again, that was NOT the question.

Meat is yummy! Some people practice Vegetarianism I practice CARNIVORISM and LOVE it!

It's all about respect, babe...Thank the animal...And if some bear or mountain lion ate me...Hey....It's all about nature. They're entitled to eat me too.

PS: And yes, meat has the best protiens WITH BCAA's in them... Soy can cause a lot of problems for people, especially since much of it can be GMO (genetically modified) even in "organic" stuff.

Warmly,
Jackie
