I think I need a pep talk... or something

I'm shocked that he would assume you're manic instead of just taking care of the problem. I have issues sleeping when I'm depressed and happy. For me, I have to be VERY careful with what I put in my body after 2pm. I can't have any caffeine, nothing with yellow or red dyes, and I have to take extra B6. I still have problems with sleeping even with all of that. I'm on a sleep schedule and routine and sometimes take sleeping medication to get me back on track.

Not sleeping can trigger depression, so maybe you should just focus on gettingyourself something to help you sleep...not change your medicines so much. If he tries to change your medicines with no regard for depression being triggered by insomnia...maybe I'd find a different doctor.

Good luck!

I have ambien.  It just doesn't work most of the time.

Changing docs isn't really an option right now.  I live in a small town and there are only a few psychiatrists in town.  Mine is the best one.  Driving a ways to see one in another town is not an option right now because my car is not running well at all.  I'd be afraid to drive it more than a few miles from home.

Kelly, have you tried Lunesta instead of Ambien?  I had Ambien and it did absolutely nothing for me... but Lunesta did work.  I actually would wake up feeling refreshed, too instead of groggy and hungover.

Chances are that you've tried it, but if not, see if you can get some of that.  Just like so many meds, some work for some people, some don't.  Give it a shot...

Regardless of how sleepy you are, get your skinny butt to the appointment!  Don't give yourself the opportunity to say 'no' and not go... it's NOT negotiable.  GO!

(and since all tough love should be accompanied by positive reinforcement... *hugs*  )

lunesta did absolutely nothing for me. ambien always seems to work for a week and then nothing. i think the other one i tried was restoril (sp?) that worked pretty good for a while. honestly, what works best for me is xanax or klonopin which leads to me thinking my insomnia is anxiety driven.

That's the problem with psychiatric medicine. It's just not an exact science.

If there is anything I can tell from your posts, you are a well grounded, intelligent woman. You know you can get through this, but you need some help. Depression sucks and a psychiatrist who doesn't seem to get it can feel like bashing your head against the wall or worse. I've been there. It took an act of congress to get me out of bed for MONTHS. I finally found the right meds after several bad combinations. Sometimes I would feel like jumping off the roof while others I don't think I would have noticed if a loved one died. I would suggest writing down every word of this post if necessary and reading it to him. If he doesn't get it, it's time to move on.

You can do this. You just have to go.
Pretty pretty please, don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f*ckin' perfect.

Honestly, I don't know I can get through this.  How much sleep deprivation and depression can a person take?

Probably a lot more than you can imagine.

Have they tried the gamut of sleep aids? For a while I was on both one to make me fall asleep, similar to Ambien, and a stay asleep, like Ambien CR. That knocked me out and helped me stay there. Is he willing to explore any alternative therapies? Have you considered acupuncture? It sounds like you need to get the sleep under control before you can be in a place to test your meds.

I am so sorry you are going through this.

Wow, I'm so sorry.  I didn't realize you were suffering sleep deprivation.  I do know first hand how that affects everything in your life, especially your mental well-being.  I hope and pray you can find some relief for your sleep issues.  That alone could very well help with your depression.  Best wishes.

Dear Kelly,

My mom was depressed for years and years.  She was on all the medications you can think of.  They all helped with her depression somewhat, but never fully.  Then she was put on Abilify in addition to her Cymbalta and it was like a miracle.  Seriously, a miracle.  I know you've been on lots of different meds, but wanted to make sure I got this information to you so you could ask about it.

Good luck!  We all send you hugs and love.

My doc actually wrote me a script for Abilify today.  Which I did try once in the past.  And it didn't help then.  But for some reason he seems to think it will help now.

I have been on more than 30 meds.  I would love to find a miracle drug but at this point I doubt I'm going to.
