So I am a little less than 4 weeks from having my surgery.. and every day that goes by I have more and more issues with being nervous and anxious. I have never had any kind of surgery so I am nervous about the whole process.. going under.. everything. And then when I think I am done being nervous about that, I worry about the pain and recovery.

Anyone have any advice on how to manage this? My head is making me go crazy!!

Yes, stop worrying.  It is a pretty easy process if you have a good doctor.

You will get knocked out and before you now it you are awake again and it is over.  They give you nice, good drugs so there is very little pain.  You are up and walking before the day is over.

Recovery is recover. It isn't too hard but it has it moments.  You may regret your decision at times, that is normal.

Just relax and enjoy this month.  Eat well, work out, clean out your closet, get your house in order for the holidays because you will feel pretty low energy for the first month or so.  Use this time to prepare for the month after surgery, don't waste your time worrying about what will go wrong, when you never know what is going to happen.  Most people have no complications at all.

Good luck,

Being nervous is perfectly normal -  tell the anaesthesiologist when they see you before surgery and they will give you a nice little anti anxiety drug to enjoy ...

Not everyone has the horrendous time you hear about on here ...

I was discharged after my swallow test (day after surgery)  - and looking after my 11 month old the next day as my husband went back to work.   A week later I joined a walking/running group!!   I was on Tylenol the second day and nothing after I went home - no more than a little discomfort ...

These forums are where people come to vent or recount their horror stories - people like me, who I believe are the majority, don't post cos they have nothing to say!!!!!

I know exactly how you feel.  I am scheduled for 12/12/11.  I think it is a natural thing.  I had a major surgery in 2002.  Unfortunately, my rny is going to be an open surgery.  I think you will be fine especially if you are having it laproscopically.  A little soreness and like another poster said, low energy but overall, I bet you'll do well.  Hang in there.
