more protein/less carbs = kelly feels full more

Duh.  I supposed I knew this already, but I am now on day three of my "cutting the cabs" week, and since I am eating fewer carbs I am eating more protein ('cause I have to eat something, right?).  And I am noticing that I feel full longer than I did when I was eating more carbs.  But I don't just mean that a protein bar or some Greek yogurt keeps me feeling full longer than a handfull (or two... or three) of pretzels.  I mean, when I was eating more carbs, even after a high protein meal of something like Greek yogurt, I would be feeling hungry three hours later or less.  Now, I eat that same meal of Greek yogurt, and I'm full for more like four hours.  That part I didn't already know.  So I guess I've proved it to myself now, eating more protein and fewer carbs will make it easier to feel satisfied on fewer calories (at least for me).

kelly, good for you for taking the bull by the horns and having your carb free week - i really admire those of you who can do this kind of thing!

who would have thought that carbs would effect hunger like that? good to know!

I've always been curious about that and the only thing that made some sense (in my crazy mind anyway) that the reason we seem to be hungrier when consuming carbs with roughly the same amount of protein is our minds- because let's face it, carbs are much more appetizing that protein, and I think cravings make us feel hungry even when we are not really hungry. So when the body knows carbs are not an option, and you take that craving out of the equation I think the body reacts by not making us feel as hungry.

Anyway, I may be making no sense at all, but this is one of those topics that does it rounds on my head from time to time.

I think some of it is how our bodies typically respond to carbs.  They tend to make our blood sugar spike and then crash.  I think that is supposed to make us feel hungry, probably because food is what we need at those times to even out our blood sugar, although to really do a good job of evening it out, we need protein, not more carbs.  But I agree with you, too, sometimes when we crave something we may think we are hungry when we really aren't.  I think there are many things that can trick us into thinking we are hungry when we really aren't.

Well it's not a duh Kelly! You are learning. My theory is that is the reason we gravitate to Carbyville. We want to be able to eat more and we instinctively know carbs will let us. I hate the restriction I have when I go super high protein but sometimes I have to will myself into it. It's a head game.

Kelly, I roasted up some chick peas today (with garlic, salt, pepper and dill), and they are delicious... and FILLING.  DOn't know what it is, but I can't eat a lot of them at once... I totally feel like I have a brick in my pouch.  So, another good thing...

I've been good the last couple days, too... hasn't been that hard, really.  It's all about mindset!  ;)

They are pretty filling.  They are dense.  Not like, say, popcorn that is all airy.  I can still eat pretty many, though.  But it's all protein.  I love them.

I've been exeriencing the reverse (converse?) of this.  I've been low-crb for years but now because of a pancreas issue I have to eat low-fat for a while.  Well low fat and low carb is pretty much a non-starter so I have been eating a lot more carbs than in the past.  And now I find that I get hungry MUCH faster than before.  I can't wait to get back to low-carb.
