adventures at the grocery store

I may have mentioned a time or two that I hate grocery shopping.

Don't the groceries always end up costing more than you thought they would?

Anyone else try to take your own bags to the store?  Have you  noticed how, when you do the self checkout thing, your own bags never fit quite right on that thing that the plastic bags hang on?  And then when you start putting your groceries in the bag, the bag tends to fall over and your stuff spills on the floor?  And then computer gets all out of sorts because you've removed items from the bagging-thing before all your stuff has been totaled up?

Also, have you noticed that when you end up buying stuff you hadn't really planned to buy because it's on sale for a good price (probably why it ends up costing more, huh?), then you didn't bring enough bags?  And even if you have the jumbo monster sized tote that you can cram all your stuff into, that doesn't mean you're actually gonna be able to lift the bag to carry it from your car to the house?

in pa? i loved grocery shopping. in chicago? loved it even more. in manhattan? it is the most miserable experience.

the grocery stores aren't like the normal ones with a bakery, and deli, and fresh meat counter (unless you go to an overpriced one). there isn't a huge selection of anything and they are so crowded you can barely move. i can get only half the things i buy at the stores by my apartment, everything else i need to get at trader joes (over 90 blocks away) by school. yes there are other ones in between but it doesn't make sense to get off the subway in between. the produce and meat are mediocre at best. plus there is no elevator in my building so i can't even get a nifty little shopping cart like i had in chicago to bring things up without arms full of bags.

At least I don't have stairs.  Once I lived in a third floor apartment and I hated carrying groceries in.

that's what i'm on... i try and only buy $20 worth at a time so i'm not carrying a ton of stuff but it's still a pain. especially when i need milk, or cat food/litter that weigh a ton.

We take our own bags (in a really big tote so we have 15 bags with us!) and the thing that blows me away is how some cashiers don't have a clue about reusable bags. Like we hand them the bags and they're confused - is this a purchase? no, you're Safeway so you don't carry Whole Foods totes. You put the groceries in them and give us a 10% credit. In DC they charge for plastic bags so if you bring your own, they don't charge you 5cents extra per bag.
But yeah, we buget for $100/week... which is probably too much for 2 people. My stuff I do tend to eat off by the end of the week but my DH tends to buy things that he won't eat for months...

You'd think the "whole foods" thing would be a clue that they don't carry those totes, huh?  Apparently so few people bring their own bags that they aren't used to dealing with them.  None of the grocery stores around me give you anything for using your own bags.  I wish they did.

Yet one more reason with I love PeaPod (Stop & Shop's grocery delivery service) here in CT. I order what I want and someone else carries it up the 3 flights of staris to my apartment. Totally makes the $7 delivery charge worth it.

Funny you mention this now.  I had that exact experience on Friday.  I keep a large insulated tote in my car for grocery trips on my way home from work.  I live 30 miles from my job which is very close to Walmart where I tend to get most of my groceries.  I found out about a sale on Chobani yogurt which at my local grocery is 1.39 a piece and this other grocery near my work was selling them for 1.00 each.  I went straight there after work and purchased 20 of them.  I got quite the look from one lady as I was standing there scooping up my favorites.  Needless to say I took advantage of a few sale items, as you said, on things I wouldn't normally purchase on a regular basis.  I put all my stuff in my insulated tote and was on my way.  Got home and could barely lift my bag!  I tend to go to the grocery less often because it is cheaper near my work versus my hometown grocery but I often don't feel like stopping there right after I get off work when all I want to do is get home so I end up with more groceries.  Then haul them up the stairs in my garage and then the stairs from my foyer to the upstairs.  I guess I can count it as a mini workout.

Here are my grocery store gripes:

- I like to pack my own groceries so that nothing gets broken or squashed, and I know where all the perishables are.  Quite often, when I tell the packer that I will bag my own stuff, they will stand right next to me and glare at me, obviously very angry.  What????????

- I bag while hubby takes the groceries out of the cart and puts them on the belt.  More often than I care to remember, the cashier asks "are you together?"  Hubby is black and I am white.  OH MY GOODNESS, is that so shocking?????  In this day and age, are people really that narrow-minded not to think that there are biracial couples in this world?  This has been going on for years now, in the same supermarket every week.  Now, when I go to start bagging, I just automatically say to the cashier "this is all together".

- When I am sliding my credit or debit card, I HATE it when the next person in line stands right next to me or behind me.  That is SO rude!!!  I have already said very loudly EXCUSE ME to get them to move and give me privacy.
