A Few Questions... Please help if you can.
RNY on 08/22/16
Hi everyone. Mimi here. Wanted to write a quick post because I have a few questions. I would appreciate any help and information given.
Question 1: So instead of having VSG, I am having RNY. They gave me my 30 day pre-op diet and in that diet I have a 14 day liquid day. What kind of liquids and things were you guys drinking during your liquid diets?
Question 2: Second question, did you lose any weight on this pre-op diet? If so how much?
Okay guys those are my only 2 questions for now, but any other information or advice you guys can give, I would greatly appreciate. So until later take care and continue to have much success on your journies..

Hi Mimi
I lost some weight on my pre-surgery diet. I was only on the liquid diet for about 7 days, so I lost a couple of lbs. I drank protein shakes, and was also allowed to have yogurt, so I often ate that as well.
My main advice to you is not to stock up on protein or foods prior to surgery. What you can tolerate may change dramatically. Go slow at first, then find things that you do well with.
The second piece of advice is to follow the plan, but don't worry too much about weighing yourself. The weight will come off if you focus on fluids, protein, exercising, and vitamins.
Overall, I'm pleased with my RNY.

Your surgeon should give you detailed info about the pre op diet he wants you to follow. Docs sometimes have different protocols. I had to do only five days of full liquids, so I could have cream soups, broth, sugar free jello, sugar free popsicles, sugar free pudding, yogurt, protein shakes and any other no calorie drinks I wanted.
I don't know if I lost anything. I did not weigh myself.

My liquid diet was only 7 days too. The last 2 days of the 7 were clear liquids only. So for the first 5 days - it was popscicles, soda, cream tomato soup, tea, jello, pudding, ice cream, protein drinks (just to try and get used to them). The last 2 days were the clear items of the list. Overall it really SUCKED!!!!
I only lost about 5-10lbs on my preop diet - I can drink a lot of calories :-)

Hi Mimi. I lost only 6 pounds on my pre-op diet, but I wasn't extremely strict either. I drank protein drinks a little. I mostly ate veggie soups or chicken noodle soup, so I could still have something to chew on. Yet it would be light in my body. My doctor said my liver was still fine, shrunken enough to be out of the way.
Hi!
You should definitely ask your doctor about the diet. I went to two in my area that are highly recommended and they had very different pre-op and post-op diets. That being said, I was on a 2-week pre-op diet that consisted of 3 low-carb protein shakes (breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack) & a small meal for dinner that had specific amounts of protein, veggies, grains. I didn't have to do any other special prep like switching to clear liquids at the end so it was pretty easy. I'm sure much of it was water, but I lost 12lbs on the pre-op diet.
Regarding liquids, I drank zero/low calorie caffeine-free drinks like propel and crystal light. I also tried several different low-carb protein shakes and made sure I had a few of each for after surgery.
Hope that helps!

Surely they gave you more than 2 weeks of liquids? this is when you start following your plan, not everyone elses plan because they can be amazingly different.
We had 4 weeks of Optifast, 5 shakes a day plus one small food meal of meat and veggies. We had to lose 8% of our excess body weight and everyone in my group did that.
