has everyone heard about this article already?
Some rude, insensitive, unprofessional doctor recently wrote an article which was published in "Outpatient Surgery Magazine" in which he repeatedly made fun of obese patients. Check it out and then consider contacting the doctor and/or the editor of the publication to let them know how inappropriate the article was.

An article published in the August issue of Outpatient Surgery Magazine, authored by Dr. John Kelly IV, contained comments that while intended as humor by Dr. Kelly, clearly offended those who struggle with obesity. Dr. Kelly’s comments do not in any way reflect the views and opinions of the University of Pennsylvania Health System, where the faculty and staff remain dedicated to providing each of its patients with the respect they deserve and the highest-quality care and service. We sincerely regret the pain that these statements may have caused.
In September, the magazine published Dr. Kelly’s apology regarding his article:
“I first wish to apologize for any offense I have caused. I do my best to respect the dignity of every patient and I do not tolerate improprieties uttered against patients in my OR. My poor decision to use one-liners I have accrued in my other career as a stand-up comedian in part expressed my frustration over this growing problem facing Americans. The obesity epidemic is a serious issue that has dire surgical consequences. Certainly taking pot shots at the problem is not the answer. For this I am deeply sorry."[/quote]

Dr Kelly,
As a health care professional, I have to say I am shocked and dismayed at the insensitivity of your article in the journal "OUTPATIENT SURGERY MAGAZINE". I found the jokes appalling and in very bad taste. In an era where making fun of others and bullying is not tolerated, you have certainly fallen short of your duty. First do no harm applies to emotional and psychological health as much as it applies to the orthopedic state. As someone who struggles with obesity secondary to immobility, severe restrictive pulmonary disease, and diabetes, I do not find your "jokes" funny at all. I find them insulting and cruel.
I would hope you have more sensitivity to your patients face than you do behind their backs.
Cordially
Terri Kohenskey RN CCRN
And his response:
Terri thank you. You are correct. I used old jokes regarding large - not necc obese - patients. I am deeply sorry and never meant to hurt anyone. Sincerely j kelly
