A few vitamin questions!

I am going to costco in the morning and I have a few vitamin questions. How do I know if I am getting dry d3? Is all non liquid d3 considered dry? Also do I have to take chewable iron? Is there a certain kind of iron I have to take??

If it is a dry tablet or a capsule with dry powdery stuff in it, it's dry D3.  If it is one of those softgel things that look like little footballs and have oily gel-like stuff inside, it is not dry D3.

If it's a liquid, you need to read the ingredients carefully and see if it contains oil of any kind.

No, you don't need chewable iron.  There is not a certain kind of iron you have to take, the way you have to take calcium citrate and not carbonate, but there are different kinds of iron.  I like carbonyl iron because it's pretty affordable, we absorb it well and it almost never causes constipation.  If you like to poop, you don't want ferrous sulfate.  The other iron salts like ferrous fumerate and ferrous gluconate aren't usually as bad as ferrous sulfate, but carbonyl is still better.

I agree with Kelly - I use the Feosol Carbonyl Iron and it's never given me an issue. It also absorbs better if you take some Vitamin C with it (I think it's 200 mg with every 30mg of iron?).

Let me know if you find carbonyl iron or dry D-3 at Costco, as I've never had luck finding it out here in AZ at Costco.

Yeah, it's 200 mg C for every 30 mg iron (that's elemental iron, like carbonyl; if you use something like ferrous sulfate, 325 mg of that only has 65 mg elemental iron, so you'd need about 400 mg C with it, not 2200 mg C).

I use carbonyl, and I believe they are 45mg iron, so I take a 500mg C with it.

D3 is better.  Are you talking about the prescription stuff?  That's D2 and it's not so good.  D2 must be converted to D3 in the body in order for the body to use it. It takes a fair amount of D2 to make a little bit of D3. I’ve seen anywhere from three units of D2 to make one unit of D3 to ten units of D2 to make one unit of D3.

Since you have not had surgery yet, dry is not better for you.  After surgery, though, you will malabsorb fats and that means you won't absorb vitamin in oil very well.  Then you will need dry D3 if you want to get any benefit from it.

How low is your vitamin D level?  I'm guessing pretty low if you doc wrote you a prescription.  We need our D level above 80, otherwise we're at increased risk for stuff like osteoporosis, heart disease, some cancers and other unpleasant stuff.  If you get your D level up there, you'll probably heal easier after surgery and also be less likely to develop an infection aft
er surgery.  So you might wanna switch to D3 now.

Script D is D2, just a higher dose of standard vitamin D.  But post ops need a dry D3 for best absorbtion.  I went through the script D scenario, using it for 24 weeks only to improve D levels from an 8 to a 14.  Dry D3, in 50K IU doses works best.  If the bottles DOES NOT SAY D3, don't buy it.  I'd recommend startin with 3-4 of the 50K IU dry D3 per week, roughly one every other day. Monitor labs, and adjust levels by taking more or less of the 50K. It's cheapest to buy this way, compared to buying 5K at local drug stores and taking 10 per day.  DAVE
