Almond Milk??
I only use Almond milk now. I have never had a problem with it being lumpy when I made a shake. I use a Ninja which has a double set of blades and I add already crushed ice and mine always come out smooth. I always put in the liquid first, then add any dry ingredients like protein powder.
I'd say just try again. Maybe you needed more almond milk. I now use between 6-8 oz. I am 9 months out.

It must be the blender you are using or the type of protein you have. I have been using almond milk (unsweetened) since day one and I don't have any issues with it. It blends very smoothly. Most of the time I use the blender bottle because the other electric blender made it too bubbly for me. (I don't use ice)
I fill the bottle with 8 oz of almond milk which covers the ball. I put a scoop of Jay Robb on top and put the lid on and shake. I only shake for about 10 secs if that and I'm not left with lumps. I'm a big fan of the almond milk because I think it makes my protein thicker and richer and it sits with me longer. Although, it doesn't have the protein of milk. But Jay Robb has 25 g a serving. So I get my 50 g in a day plus extra from yogurts etc.
Give the blender bottle a try. You can pick it up at GNC or vitamin shoppe.
