problem with dry mouth

For the last couple months, I have been on a medication that has a side effect of causing dry mouth.  If you've ever been on a medication that has this side effect, it's not just a matter of feeling a little thirsty.  It's like I have no saliva in there are all.  My mouth gets so dry I can hardly speak.

The problem I'm having is waiting 30 minutes after I eat to drink.  Most of the day I drink constantly.  And I'm OK not drinking with my meal as long as I'm not eating something real dry.  I eat a lot of chili and yogurt and stuff like that and I feel Ok without a drink when I eat that.  But going 30 minutes with nothing to drink is awful.

What I've been doing is chewing sugar free gum and/or sucking on sugar free hard candy to get through the 30 minutes and that helps some but it's still extremely uncomfortable.  Anybody else dealing with this?  How are you doing it?  It probably doesn't sound like a very big deal, but seriously, my mouth is so dry my lips stick together.

I heard these are good.  http://www.biotene.com/?google=b_&rotation=833&banner=3551&k w=419
There are other products on the market, too.  Check out Walmart or a drug store.

Excellent!  I will check at CVS.

It just occurred to me.  I have a medical procedure Tuesday that I am not supposed to eat or drink before, and I will go nuts if I can't drink for several hours.  I gotta get this mouth spray or something before then.  Thanks!

I use the Biotene sprays.  I still suffer with dry mouth although I can drink after I eat since the "reversal".  I've always had a hard time with dry mouth and the Biotene helps a ton.

I'm gonna try the spray.  Where do you buy it?  Would CVS have it?

Kelly, try the Biotene spray, it really does help. You can buy it at any drug store or even Walmart. Another tip is to have like a spoonful of applesauce at the end of your meal. It helps me especially if I've eaten something spicy and my mouth's on fire.

I'm gonna get some of the Biotene spray.  The applesauce at the end of the meal won't help that much for me.  I can eat something like yogurt or soup and my mouth is not too dry while I'm eating but five minutes later, it's dry as a desert.  Five minutes after drinking it's dry as a desert!

I have the same problem and use biotene spray and WHEN i use the gum, I only use a half piece just in case it goes down.  I want it to be as small as possible.  I have also heard, dry mouth contributes to cavities and loss of teeth, so you might want to speak with a dentist as well.

I probably do need to go to the dentist.  I haven't been in a long time.  I have not had a cavity since I was a kid and I once went about eight years without seeing a dentist and when I finally went, I had no cavities and no problems of any kind.  I'm not saying that means I should only go every eight years!  But, well, I guess that is one of my excuses for not going.

I really don't worry about swallowing gum.  I have not accidentally swallowed a piece of gum since I was a kid, either.  Apparently many people swallow gum by mistake, because I see people post here about it fairly often, but I don't really know how that happens.  I don't accidentally swallow things.

Kelly,

thanks for your response to my post.  I, by the way, accidentally swallow things because I talk and inhale air at the same time.  It comes with being a dominant visual  thinker meaning, I see my thoughts in pictures and have so many pictures in my head that I want people to see (hear) and my lips won't move fast enough to get it all out, so I get excited and try to hurry, thus (sometimes) forgetting I need to be careful.  HOWEVER, I work much harder at it since my RNY and so far, have had great success with slowing down, at least while I'm eating or chewing gum.
