Other people's opinions

I also do not understand why people get to voice their opinion when someone else is having WLS.  It frustrates me to no end!  I am a social worker and within my unit we have several clients who have had WLS.  Many of my coworkers were very critical of the clients' choices so when it came time for me to do it I chose not to tell my coworkers until after surgery.  When I chose to tell family members my brother's wife (who is a nurse) was very critical.  Those experiences made me very gun shy about telling others of my decision to have surgery.

And I can understand why you would be hesitant to tell people after all that.

I feel sorry for the clients, by the way, that are affected by your coworkers critical attitudes.  It makes me really sad that people working in a helping profession would behave that way.

I had a very hard time with my coworkers' attitudes, also.  I am relatively certain they were not openly critical with the clients but I am sure it had to have come out in less direct ways.

I would think it would be likely to come out in indirect ways.  And the fact that they did not respect their clients' decisions about WLS makes me wonder if they respect clients' decisions about other things.  And social workers are supposed to really respect and support clients' autonomy,

I agree completely.  Unfortunately, some people have a hard time checking their own values/beliefs/standards at the door when they do their job.

I had people at my former job tell me not to do it. Two of them had even had the surgery themselves! Apparently they both had complications from theirs and that's all they focused on. The head nurse there even had the nerve to tell me it was a bunch of crock and didn't work, that it was better if I just lost the weight on my own.....she was a size 2 telling me a size 24 what to do bout my weight/health. I even had complete strangers who I wasn't even talking to tell me not to do it. Needless to say I ignored them all.

I agree with you, Kelly. I understand and accept that other people have opinions, and that they often differ from mine. But it really doesn't matter to me. I made the choice for WLS for *me* - not for anyone else.

I think people give their opinions on WLS (and pregnancy or not having children) because they feel that WLS as a medical procedure is a choice.  I also think they feel we are just being weak to have the surgery rather than 'just' losing the weight.

I know my surgery was a choice but for me it was sort of a like a choice to live or die slowly.  Others don't look at it that way.  They think it is like whether to have a face lift or not.

PS - I'm getting some repairs done once my loss has stablized.
