Bariatric Advantage is fine.  It's a good brand.

Currently I use ENS from Celebrate but I am tired of it.  Unfortunately, I have a ton left.  When they are gone I am buying something like Centrum.

I heard Centrum won't dissolve.  Metagenics makes a great vitamin and it was tested on RNY patients.  Patients took the vitamins, then swallowed cameras attached to dental floss.  After they filmed the vitamin dissolve, they pulled up the cameras.  My surgeon did the study for them.

Where did you hear that Centrum won't dissolve?  And why wouldn't it dissolve?

I'm thinking it has to dissolve, because I know many, many RNY folks that use it and have excellent labs.  If their Centrum did not dissolve, they would have deficiencies like vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin K, copper and zinc, but most of them do not.

Is Centrum still a one-a-day?

No, we'd need two a day.  We need 200% of the RDA of stuff.  I don't think there is a vitamin out there that gives us that in just one a day.  We need to pick a multi with 100% of the RDA of stuff and then take two a day.

Hi Kelly,  I also take bariatric advantage chewables, and the "dose" is two chewable tablets.  Does that mean that I should be taking four tablets a day?  Or possibly separating the two tablets to one in the morning and one in the afternoon?

Thanks as always for your no-nonsense answers!

You only need two a day because two gives you 200% of most things.  I would separate them, though.  With some vitamins, we can absorb a huge amount at one time.  But with others, we can only absorb a certain amount at a time.  So you may not absorb everything as well if you take both at the same time.

I seen this study on vitamins and how to tell if they are good for you on Dr. Oz over a year ago and I looked it up. Here's what you should do:

1. Place approximately one cup of white vinegar in a small bowl and warm it to 98 degrees or so by placing it inside a larger bowl of water that you "top up" several times with warm water from the tap. (The goal is to keep the vinegar reasonably close to 98 degrees for half an hour.)

2. Drop your multi-vitamin (or other pill) into the vinegar, and jostle it about every five minutes or so by gently shaking or swirling the cup. While you can also stir the mix with a wooden stick or toothpick, be careful not to touch the tablet itself.

3. The tablet should dissolve within 30 minutes. (This is the USP standard for all pharmaceutical tablets.) If it doesn't dissolve within a full hour, it's not doing you much good. Get another brand!

The Centrum Silver does not have iron in it, but that doesn't matter if you take iron separately.  So it's fine.
