kinda OT - plastic food containers?

I often have lots of leftovers, and in fact sometimes I make extra food at dinner time so that I will help leftovers for lunch the next day.  I mostly use those cheap Gladware-type containers to store leftovers.  Sometimes I reuse containers that other stuff came in, like plastic bowls that had margerine or cool whip or something like that.

Lately I've been reading a lot of stuff about how many types of plastic contain chemicals that can leach into your food and that you shouldn't store food in plastic.  I've also read that you definitely shouldn't microwave your leftovers in plastic, that if you do store your food in plastic containers, you should put it in a glass container to heat it up.

Anyone got an opinion on this?  And if you don't store food in plastic, what do you use?  Glass?  What type of glass containers and where do you get them and are they very expensive?  What about taking food places?  I'm picturing packing my partner's lunch for work in glass containers and wondering how many of those containers he would end up breaking.  I'm guessing a lot.

Have you tried bento? Like Eggface uses them alot, i'm not sure if they are safe in microwave?

We have used plastic containers all our lives and i don't think there has been any deaths from that.   Frozen food comes in plastic containers too and we nuke/bake them.

No, I don't think there have been any deaths due to plastic containers.  I think most people use a lot more plastic containers than they used to,  though.  Like, ketchup used to come in glass bottles but now many brands come in plastic.  and before everyone had microwaves, they reheated food in the oven and I'm pretty sure they didn't reheat it in plastic containers like Gladware-type containers because they would melt in the oven, wouldn't they?

I'm a gladware person too they are so convenient.  The only glass containers I know of are the new ones made by rubbermaid.  They are very nice but not cheap, like $5 for a small one and $9/10 for a large one and thats at Wally world.  I guess I will try and break my habit of heating food in these containers, I never knew it was bad for us, but the durability and convenience to take to work I can't do without.  I would definitely break the glass one.

I have heard the same things also yet I continue to use my plastic containers. I try to make the best choices when it comes to my health but honestly I am worn out from all the fears of everything we do in life. I will be 57 in less than a month..I gotta go somehow...LOL

I read up on this alot when I was pregnant with Mady my youngest. BPA free is what you need to find and use if you can. I believe Lock N Lock (qvc) is bpa free.

I always store in plastic but heat in my glass dishes.

I've been slowly replacing plastics with glass.  Pyrex makes a nice storage bowl with plastic lid.  I can't afford to switch all at once, and plastic is much more convenient for work.

Yeah, I'd have to switch slowly, too.  I'm in the process of switching some other things, like switching from paper napkins to cloth.  Lots of it I'm doing a little at a time because I can't afford all new stuff at once.  Plus I want to go ahead and use up what I have.  I would hate to throw out all my plastic containers all at once!

I use the new Rubbermade ones.  They are not cheap, but I buy a set a month.  i figure with the money I am saving with eating better I am worth the new glassware!  And it is AWESOME!  They have several sizes and you can buy one at a time at Target. The plastic is not GOOD!!!!

Yeah, buying one at a time would be good for me.
