a friend of mine used a spoonful of pb to get her Downs Syndrome son to settle in for the night.... she wanted to keep him off of meds as much as possible.
It is the same thing that makes turkey the food of sleepiness - tryptophan. Good stuff lol

Peanut butter works for me.

I found that out when I was doing family day care.

If I took time to have a peanut butter sandwich while the kids were sleeping, I could not put my feet up. I had to keep doing something or my head would nod. It was all from eating peanut butter.

It works faster than an hour for me.

It does not last though.

I mean, sleeping for less than 5 hours sleep no matter what the weather. It is not like the room temperature is too hot nor that there is outside noises or lights. I do not feel the need to rise and use the bathroom. I just sleep most of the time 4 hours. I cannot get up and go back to bed. The medication my doctor gave me helps me to maybe stay in bed longer. I have found that sometimes I am aware that I wake but I do not feel that my sleep time is over and I can fall back to sleep with the Lorazepam.

And it was 72 cents for 30 pills. It was .05 mg.

Wow Kelly... I really, really feel for you. I have suffered from insomnia in the past and know that it is MADDENING.

I have tried the Trazadone route and it worked fine but left me slightly hung over in the morning, as do other sleeping pills

Now I swear by Chlor-Tri-Mitron... An OTC antihistamine. Some people prefer Benedryl, but it can wire me, so I avoid it!I

Also, I must have some white noise to focus on (a fan or a sleep machine), or I just think and think all night long.

The problem for me is that once I have a sleepless night or two, I start to lose confidence that it will ever be different and I think the anxiety created by that just snowballs the whole situation!

I will be thinking of you..... Hope you find some peace soon.

I'm another insomniac bird. My sleep apnea is gone since losing weight, but I can't stay asleep more than a couple of hours at a time. I haven't come up with a solution other than a sleeping pill, which I don't like to take. Nothing else helps.

I share your misery...

Have you tried meditation?  The few times I have had issue with insomnia, I have found this to be a big help.

Have you tried melatonin supplements?  They really helped me when I was having trouble sleeping in grad school.

I have not but I'm adding it to my shopping list.  Can I find it at most stores, with the vitamins and other supplements?

I think most pharmacies like CVS or Walgreens carry it.   I usually see it with the vitamins and supplements.

I'm so sorry to hear that so many of you suffer from this as well. I have menopausal insomnia and it literally makes me sick - like a bad hangover.

I was diagnosed with sleep apnea pre-op and used the CPAP until I lost enough weight and my apnea improved. I have some minor issues so I was fitted with a dental mouthpiece from a sleep specialist dentist. Apnea taken care of but the insomnia persists so I went though the "sleep hygiene" at the sleep center and still didn't achieve relief. Eventually I learned my issues were related to my hormonal changes so I started on bio-identical hormones. Things started to improve and I was sleeping like a baby until my insurance company declared they won't pay for bio-identical. I went off the hormones and the insomnia worsened.

Previously, just a couple Unisom (I buy the OTC from Costco) would help for a few hours then I'd chew a Melatonin from Trader Joe's to put me back to sleep. Then I tried Lunesta and that would help for a few hours but I'd still wake up and require chewable melatonin in order to go back. My days of feeling great started to erode and I stopped exercising and went into a 4 month stall.

My insomnia became more severe as did my dry eye (I'm on Restasis) and my hot flashes. I finally had enough and went to GYN this week to ask doc for ANYTHING. We decided on an estrogen patch and Prometrium (progesterone). She also suggested a specific brand of Melatonin. DOUGLAS LABS. It's 3 mg and supposedly the most pure form of pharmaceutical grade melatonin and it's extended release. She suggested taking the progesterone at bedtime along with the melatonin. If I wake up then I could take Unisom or Lunesta but hopefully it won't get to that point again. Fingers crossed!
