MRI post RNY, safe?

I need an MRI on my shoulder and was wondering if it is safe to do post RNY?  I know I  have staples although the doctor's office said, "oh, they don't use stables with gastric by-pass."  I left it at that because I didn't want to get into it with a nurse, on the phone.

Don't know how far out you are.  I had an MRI around 1 year out but called my surgeon's office beforehand.  The magnetism can pull on the staples (titanium) so he would not recommend an MRI to someone less than (he said either 3, or 6) months after surgery while things are still healing.  That was my surgeon's opinion.  Yours might say something different.  Also - and MRI on your shoulder should not pass over your gut, so it's probably okay... but if you are early out I'd check to be sure.

I used to be an MRI tech.  It's been 20 years but we had patients with staples.  We were careful if they were near the eyes in case the magnetic field had a slight tug, but for the most part they were okay.  It's not true that the MRI on your shoulder "should not pass over your gut" because your whole body is in the magnetic field.  That's different from a CT scan where the x radiation is localized to the body part being scanned.

I've had two since mu surgery, including one today (on my shoulder, like you). Just be aware that some doctors do use staples, where as some hand-sew.

Mention it to the tech.  Pre-surgery I had issues with metal chips in my eye in the past, so they did xrays to make sure everything was kosher.
Due to current economic conditions the light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off.                                                                         HW: 396 GW:230

Titanium is non-ferrous so that's not an issue. We do people with shoulder, knee and hip replacements all the time. Generally it's just aneurysm clips, pacemakers, and bullets that you have to worry about.
