4 Years Post-Op - slowly gaining weight back

Hey guys - just wondering if anyone out there has had the same problem as me. I'm right at 4 years post-op and my weight seems to slowly be creeping back up. I've switched jobs, doing all office work now, and also got married about 4 months ago. About a year ago, I started experiencing knee problems and can't jog like I used to. For some time now, it takes a little more and a little more to fill me up. Is there anything that I can do to retrain myself or anything that someone else in a similar situation has done that has worked? I'm hoping to get back to exercising full force soon. Thanks in advance!

sounds like you need to increase your activity more than anything...

have you seen the doctor about your knees?

are there other exercises you can do?

as for filling you up?

have you added back lots of bulky veggies?

are you drinking enough before and then waiting 30 minutes to drink and NOT drinking while eating?

Define creeping back up.  5 pounds, 10 pounds, 50 pounds?  I would still like to lose about 10 more pounds.  I am like you, it is not that I don't know what to do, I just can't seem to be as motivated at i want.

Sounds like you are able to clearly pinpoint the changes that have contibuted to your weight gain.

Many newly married non-ops also gain weight. A level of comfort and change in lifestyle contribute. Maybe you can get your wife on board with the exercise and both benefit.

Job change to a more sedentary one plus not being able to jog as you used to both clearly contribute. After clearance from your doc maybe a recumbent bike would be the answer? You would be able to get back into exercise with less strain on your knees.

As Nessa said fill up on vegetables and fruits after eating your protein. Also try not drinking for at least an hour after meals might help you feel full longer.

I have been told the protein shakes are key in maintaining the feeling fullness and staying satisfied.  I also think volume foods like salads will help w/feeling full just be careful of what goes in the salad and what type/amt of dressing you use.  As far as exercise how about elliptical, swimming?

Thanks guys, I guess more than anything else, I just need the motivation. I went to the doctor about my knees and we tried a treatment that didn't work. I haven't been back since and need to schedule an appointment.

As far as weight, over the last year and half, I've put back on about 50 lbs. I started at 418 and went down to 279. I'm hovering around 330 right now.

Go back to basics - eat protein first (good quality food!), find exercise that you can do (if you can't run, walk!) log into MyFitnessPal.com and write down every bite you take and every step you walk.  Go to the doctor and get your bloodwork done to make sure you are not deficient in anything and take your vitamins ...  No drinking with or for 30 minutes after meals ...

You need to jump start your metabolism so don't go on any crazy liquid diets - be prepared to lose 1-2lbs a week - this weight didn't go on overnight and it won't leave overnight either!!!!   Restrictive crazy diets will cause your metabolism to slow down and may well lead to the dreaded yo-yo dieting we all did before this surgery!

You may have lost the malabsorption but your pouch is still there - it can and will help you if you go back to the lifestyle you had when you lost weight the first time!
