just browsing boards

I can't sleep and I'm bored so I've been browsing different boards on OH, places I don't usually read or post.  Here's what I've learned:

~  I love my RNY.  And I wonder why anyone that visits OH before deciding what surgery to have ends up with a band.  Because that board is really depressing.  I did see a few posts from people that lost incredible amounts of weight and were very happy.  But only a few.  I wonder why surgeons are even still performing that surgery?  It's my understanding that some are not anymore, and some insurance companies may not be paying for it anymore, either.  But seriously, why is anyone performing it?  Why is any insurance paying for it?  Anyway, I love my RNY.

~  If our docs tend to freak when we tell them how much D3 we are taking, they must actually pee their pants when someone with DS tells them how much they take!

~  People on all boards ask questions like "I had surgery seven and a half days ago and today I ate three and one half teaspoons of yogurt.  I thought I was only supposed to be able to eat two and a half teaspoons.  Is my surgery broken?" and "my baby toe on my left foot hurts when I poke it with a stick.  Do you think that means my doctor messed up when he did my surgery?  Should I go to the ER?"

By the way.  I do not mean to discourage anyone from asking questions and I'm pretty much a believer that there are no stupid questions and if you want to know something you should ask.  So please don't get offended if you recently posted a question similar to those mentioned above.  But, well... sometimes it gets funny, doesn't it?

I appreciate you vets who have stuck in there to help the newbees but I too, laugh at some of the questions.  Some I try to answer and some I just wait to see what comes up on it.  I quess some folks, even if they have the information, never thought it would happen to them, ie stalls.  Some folks have NO information it seems.  Like did you see your Dr under a rock???  Did you sleep through the classes???? Why would you let that guy come at your with a knife?????

I do wish Drs would do a better job educating folks about what they are getting themselves into.

Really, I think the questions about stalls probably have more to do with a deep fear of failure than a lot of education, at least in many cases.  I mean, people often post something like "I swore I wouldn't post a question like this and I've been expected a stall, but...."

I totally agree that doctors could do a much better job educating people, though.

I agree that the questions come from the fear of failure because, just in the past year,  I have seen several PRE-OP folks reassure new post-ops who have hit the dreaded week 2 or 3 stall that it is normal and just to relax... and then a few months later when those SAME people are post-op and facing their first stall, they are the one who posts a "WTH is going on? why did I quit losing so quickly?!?" post!  They KNOW it is coming, they know it is temporary and that the solution is simply to wait it out, they have passed this info on to others (based on what so many vets have said), yet they still freak out when THEY are the one who stalls at week 3.

Price, I echo what you say about Drs educating people better! I have learned so much just by being here at OH. When I was early out and felling lousy, I read every page here on the RNY board. Saved my sanity!

I don't know what I would have done without all the wonderful people here on OH. I took the 6 month nut classes, met with all the people required, the special NUT, PHYSCO lady who had no clue. And I can say with all my heart that the information I needed to keep going  after the first few weeks I got right here. Now, I am only 2 1/2 weeks out of surgery, but I read almost every post daily. I am aware of what lays ahead of me and my journey on the losers bench do to the great people of OH ( esp Kelly). In MY opinion the nut has a degree but mine has no clue, the Nurse Pract. that does all of the follow ups is a joke. You never get to see the surgeon again unless there is a complication. Asked for so explanation of my new anatomy and where it is and she was unable to explain anything. I got more information off of the U Tube video (recc. form someone here). So if I have a question I come here, If I have a problem I come here,If I am down that day I come here. Thanks for letting me vent (my doctor wouldn't) (lol)

You  never get to see the surgeon again?  And the NP can't explain your new anatomy?  Man, that's scary.

Wow I am so glad my surgeon isn't like that. He does all his own follow-ups and I see him everytime (I'm glad too cuz he's HOTTTTTT, hehehe, I call him Dr. McDreamy, LOL)!

My surgeon brought me a 8 1/2 X 11 glossy colored picture of my new pouch, liver etc. the morning after surgery (6 days ago).  Maybe you should ask for your picture.

Note:  I dreamt about what was on that picture for the next two nights.
