Salad?

Is it ok to eat salad with protein on it (like turkey, chicken or ham) for 2 meals? I have started sipping protein drinks during the day and I am hoping to get enough protein from 2 shakes (throughout the day) and my 2 salads. My NUT said for someone my size 40 grams will be ok. I think I am managing about 40 with my 2 shakes so I will have more with my salads. I also drink water (because I have given up soda {AGAIN}). I am really trying to eat more closely to my new living style than what got me to be SMO. So any suggestions will really be helpful! Thanks in advance!

Well, I disagree with your  nut about 40 grams being OK.  The ASMBS says patients typically do well with 1.1 gram protein per kilogram of their ideal body weight, which works out to about half a gram per pound of what you should weigh (not what you do weigh).  According to that, 40 grams a day is only OK if your ideal weight is 80 pounds.

All that said, why wouldn't it be OK to eat salad with protein on it for two meals?  If you do two shakes with 20 grams each (and it's easy to make a protein shake with 20 grams or even more), that would be 40 grams.  If you only put about 1.5 ounce of chicken or turkey on your salad and at that twice a day, that would boost you up to about 60 grams.

I always thought that 40 was low and have been trying to get in about 60 grams. Alot of the protein shakes that I drink (even though I really don't like them) have about 20 grams. I use FF milk with my shakes so that gives me about 8 grams of some protein.

BTW..my ideal weight is no where NEAR 80lbs! lol

I second Kelly's reference to the ASMBS to determine the amount of protein you require. Once I was cleared for salads, I started incorporating baby spinach or baby spring greens because they are so nutrient rich. That said, I made sure that my protein ratio was high enough to get me to my allotted protein numbers. Now as I maintain, I use salad greens as an integral part of my meals.

I have 2 salads a day, each with 3 oz of chicken.  My breakfast and at least 2 snacks are greek yogurt. With that I get in 90 grams/protein a day.
