DO YOU KISS AND TELL?
I also feel that if I can talk to just one student (person) that this might help....I am going to talk about it. My students have been some of my biggest supporters. I love going to school in new, smaller clothes and a teenage girl says..."Cute outfit, Mrs. M" or one of the football boys pulled me into his little group and said "Dang, Mrs. M....you are looking good !!" Being 59 years young (and being over three-hundred pounds for 35 years)....I need all the encouragement I can get !!!!! So, yes, I tell !
Most people are supportive, some are not just for the fact that I lose a lot of weight on my own waiting for surgery and some don't think I "needed' this surgery. But I don't have to justify myself to anyone and it's been liberating to just look at someone and tell them I don't have to explain myself and watch their face :)

I think I would be a bit more hesitant in a professional setting though. I am a stay at home mom so I don't have that part to worry about but if I did, I think I would probably not disclose that I had surgery unless directly asked. I don't think a discussion of my health belongs in the workplace. It seems unprofessional.
I'm proud of my courage in accessing an effective tool in dealing with the disease of obesity.

"Support fosters your growth. If you are getting enough of the right support, you will experience a major transformation in yourself. You will discover a sense of empowerment and peace you have never before experienced. You will come to believe you can overcome your challenges and find some joy in this world." Katie Jay
I just don't feel like it's anybody else's business. That's just me. It's like telling people how much money you earn. It's personal. I may change my mind later, but right now, even the in-laws don't know. I don't see them for a few months so I intend not to tell them if I can avoid it.
Guess it just depends on your comfort level. This is just a personal choice for me that is more comfortable.
Anyone that asks or if it comes up in conversation, because like the others said. I'm am so proud that I made a positive decision to get my health and life back.

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor. Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me. If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her. Check out my blog.
