1 month appts..

So i go to my nutrition appt. yesterday and basically she tells me that i can pretty much eat soft foods.  My little book says mashed foods and she says oh thats just to transition you into the soft foods for the next few days.  I am like OK... then she brings up vitamins...oh yes the vitamin ordeal.
So you can have 1 multivitamins a day..of the flintstone complete.  We just had a meeting today and they are a complete vitamin so those are good to take.   I am like ummm no i am taking centrum silver and shouldn't i take two a day? She is like why would you take 2 a day your getting 100% of your daily needs from them. I said no i am a RNY patient thus i don't absorb what i need and the ASMBS says we need 200% because we don't absorb things.  She is like no we just had a meeting about this today (here is where she gets a bit perturbed with me) and this is the way our Bariatric system works...but you can do it however you want.  lol  So then she precedes to tell me that i can have B12 once a week 1000mg and D3 every day 1000mg.  I am not even going into anymore with her because i can't change her if i wanted to.  She has her job and obviously i can't change the whole system besides that she is new.  She quickly ends the appt. and really i have not even begun to ask her questions but alas...i know i have my appt. tomorrow with my Bariatric Surgeons RN.

2nd appt. today.  I really like my Bariatric place by the way they have been awesome huge help in this process and besides the vitamin issue very much informative.  My BSRN is 8 years out from surgery.
So i am talking to her and i am able to ask her some of the questions i didn't get to ask the NUT yesterday.  She tells me i only need to do a 1000mg of b!2 a week and i am like a week?  i thought it was a day...no no she says you can do it more than once a week but its spendy medicine to pee out because if you have to much in your system thats where it goes.  Most people just use it for energy.  I ask her about vitamin d3.  Oh she says you can just take the gelcaps once a day..I didn't even go there.  She drew a pic of one and everything.  she told me to take the vitacin chews and again..i just held my tongue.  Everything they told me is wrong.  so i am going to do things my way..and we will see what happens in the end at my blood tests in 6 months.

So i am on the lookout for vitamin d3 sublingual or chewable and calcium chews.  I have one more place to check and then i will just order those online at Bariatric Choice.  I love their lemon Calcet Bites..they are not to sweet.

My appt. went well...i have lost about 36 lbs so far so that part is going well.
Happy day everyone

You can come see my NUT. She's cool, and spends no less than 30 - 45 minutes with me each time we meet.

I haven't heard anything about the soft gels, my D3's are those...and they're tiny little guys. My WL doctor hasn't said to do othewise, but he's been extremely clear on what I can and can't take, what he wants me to and not to take. My B12 pill is the only one I have to break up. My blood tests since surgery have been decent.

Are you doing a sublingual B12?  I'm wondering why you would need to break that up?

The issue with the soft gels is that they have oil inside and we malabsorb fats so we won't absorb D3 in oil as well as we absorb dry D3.  We'll absorb some of it, just not all of it.

My NUT is basically the same way. Everything is by her little book and she does not sway from it one inch, so I basically do what I've learned from REAL people who have actually had this surgery. My NUT is very very thin and has obviously nothing but book knowledge, no actual experience. She's nice enough but I don't bother arguing with her, I just do what I have to do for myself.

I wish they would all hire NUTS that have actually been through some sort of WLS so that perhaps they would have more insight and understanding of it.

If you have a whole foods near you, they have a really good chewable 1000mg d3 that's about $10 for 100 tablets....I take that daily plus what I get with my calcium and multi.  Sorry I can't think of the name of it but I'll edit this post when I get home with the name of it.  I like this particular chewable because it is sweetned with fruit juice (only 1g sugar per tablet) and taste yummy!

If you don't have whole foods, Nature Made (which you can find at Target and most drug stores) has a chewable d3.

You are doing the right things.  You know what you need to take and why you need to take it.

I'll tell you what will happen in six months.  Your labs will be good and they will be amazed because your vitamin D level will be higher than any of their other patients and then they'll ask you how much D3 you're taking and then they'll freak out and tell you you're taking way to much of it.

What does of D3 are you looking for?

What is up with these Nuts?  Mine is the same way too.  I got a call back from her supervisor after a call was made to complain about misinformation and wanting a portion of my program fee back because of it.  Now they are all going to meet along with my surgeon and go over the ASMBS standards.  Keep complaining!

Thanks to all the people here that have kept me questioning and researching, especially Kelly - you know your stuff and where to find it.

Wow, I am so glad you pursued that.  I know it can be a real hassle and it's not really our jobs to educate or dieticians or to make sure they are providing correct information to patients, and if someone decides it's not worth their time or energy, i totally understand that.  But I think it's great when we feel we do have the time and the energy and can try to bring about change.  Because that is the only way I think things will change - someone needs to complain, and complain to the right people that will actually be concerned and might actually want to fix it.

I think asking for part of your program fee back is an excellent idea.  You really should get it back, too.  I wish I had thought to ask for part of mine back too!
