One of the best things I have done for myself since my surgery was to get fitted professionally. I too like you had the same fit problems. As a matter of fact when the lady helped me with the first bra that fit perfectly, she said look, you can see your little waist now. THAT in itself was well worth it! Seriously I have been wearing my new bras proudly since. It seems to have made my posture better as well. Just be prepared to hear the real size you should be wearing. I was certainly shocked to hear my number. Good Luck!!

You can do this at home. It does require a tape measure and some basic (gulp!) math.

While wearing a bra, wrap a tape measure snugly around your rib cage, directly under the bottom bra edge.

The tape should be snug, but not tight.

If you measure 33" or more add 3. (For example if you measure 33", add 3 = size 36). Now, if you measure 32" or under add 5 (for example, if you measure 29", add 5 = size 34).

If the total adds up to an odd number, such as 37, try the next size up (size 38). This is your bra number (32, 34, 36, etc.).

To get your cup size, measure over the fullest part of the bust, The difference between this measurement and the bra number is your cup size

If the difference is:

1" = A Cup is your cup size.

2" = B Cup

3" = C Cup

4" = D Cup

5" = DD Cup

6" = DDD Cup

Example: Your bra number is 36 and your bust measurement is 38. Subtract 36 from 38 and you get a 2" difference. 2" = B cup. Therefore, your correct bra size is 36B.

There is another method where in step 1 instead measuring directly under your bra you measure above the fullest part of your bust. Kinda right underneath where your pits start. Can't remember the math for that one thought.

I did go to Hanes and have it done there just in case but it came out the same. The best part about being in the store, however, is they can usually suggest styles that might work for your shape better.

Ok, my head just exploded. That's too much math! Did I ever mention I am really, really, really bad at math??? I even hired a teenager to tutor my kids in math. When they were in ELEMENTARY SCHOOL!

But thank you. That's empowering knowledge. I may start with a professional fitting though. Knowing my limited skills I'd probably end up in worse condition!

LOL...I hear ya. I struggled with it the first few times I tried it as well. Still don't know what I was doing wrong but I came out with a 44A! I don't think so.

That was the main reason I went ahead and asked them to do it at Hanes when I was out at Arundel Mills. I still didn't trust my math.

While this works fine when your breasts are reasonably firm, it does NOT work when they literally hang to your waist. There is no good way to hold them up to accurately measure them.

I had a "professional" fitting that was no help whatsoever. She ended up doing more of the same guesswork that I go through myself (and the fit was the same hit or miss among some combination of a 36 or 38 band and a DD and DDD cup that I was already doing myself)! Also, when there is a lot of extra skin, no matter what you do, you will likely end up with a certain amount of trial and error.

I know you are in baltimore, but there's a place in Silver Spings that does the best bra fittings BAR NONE....it's called Dor NE (http://www.dornecorset.com/). It caters to larger and hard to fit bra sizes (small bands/ large cups and large bands/cups). I went there a few years ago and I must say the girls look like that could sit up and whistle dixie all on thier own now.

I totally was NOT ready for the little ole lady to come into the dressing room with me and make me derobe from the waist up...but she's owned this shop for like 30+ years and when I say it was the most THROUGH bra fitting I've ever had...it makes victoria's secret and lane bryant seem like that beginners they are.

No more uniboob...no more quadboob...no moreback fat....no more cutting underwire. Once I got a proper fit, it was like night and DAY I tell ya! The bra fittings are $5, but if you make a purchase, it's free!

ETA: I forgot to mention they do bra alterations?!?!? Talk about a custom fit!!!

Very good resource! I also liked Sylene, in Chevy Chase. Yes, I bought a bra there just b/c it brought my boobs up to a reasonable level.
I spent about an hour at Kohls today, experiencing the same problem as Nik described. 34 fits in the band but DD is "cup runneth over" and they didnt' seem to carry anything bigger than DD in 34s or push-up types. So, instead of buying ones that are likely to have my boobs escape from underneath, I'll just buy something too small and hope I lose some more weight in the tatas.

With ya MM - whilst I feel badly for Nik, I cannot feel too badly as I have to order my 34 AA's from Aerie or shop at Justice for my bras.

I have no boobies to speak of, and when I bend over with no shirt on, they look like cow teats.

So, so sad. Boobies are on my to do list when I win the lottery :)
