thanks soo much for the post!!!! I have my WLS on the 26th and all I seem to think is about is all the things I will never be able to eat again!!!!! I bought steak yesterday, which is something I hardly ever buy, Im not a big meat eater but just knowing I cant have it for one year is getting to me.....and PB fudge which is something I make maybe 2 times a year just the thought of not having it is driving me insane.....I always said I just dont understand how I can be soo fat, when I dont eat that much, but now I know its the kinds of food I eat and the amounts when I do eat them.......I want pizza, ice cream, steak, nachos, hotdogs, fudge, the list could go on and on for all the foods I want to eat right now....But thank God as much as I want these foods I want to be healthy more......

Another who can't have steak for a year? Why? I was cleared to eat normally at 6 weeks. Is this requirement physical or nutritional?

I weighed over 570 when I had my first RNY and my surgeon said to enjoy myself because the RNY would restrict my future eating.  He was not worried about the size of the liver--part of the reason many docs want a pre-op liquid diet.

Anyway, although I'm of Polish/Lithuanian heritage, my wife makes wonderful German food.  I have a friend who loves it too, so my wife made sauerbraten (German roast beef) with sour dark brown gravy.  We also had potato dumplings, red cabbage and another cooked vegetable.  I have had this meal in the years since the RNY, but I haven'd savored it as much.  Plus, I simply can't eat too much anymore.

My surgery is on Friday. The directions I got from my surgeon (Dr. Suh) said that 7 days before surgery to "avoid red meat, lettuce and leafy vegetables."

So my "last meal" on Wednesday will be chicken. Thursday will be full liquid and, in the evening, the ever yummy Magnesium Citrate.

I dont know why my Dr has said no steak or pork chops for a year....other than it is a solid meat and more likely to get stuck

When I went to a support group meeting last Tuesday, one of Dr. Suh's nurses was there.  When asked, she said that red meat was more difficult to digest & takes longer to wend its way through you & that was why Dr. Suh calls for no red meat 5-7 days before surgery.
