Don't you have any Mennonites or Amish in your area Kelly?  The ones around here have all kinds of fresh everything including milk and eggs and I definately don't pay $4 a dozen.

Yeah, there are lots of Amish and Mennonites in my part of the state.  How do you find out who is selling raw milk, though?  It seems that farmers typically don't advertise it.

How much do you pay for eggs?

Of course I'd love it if they were cheaper but I really feel perfectly OK paying $4.25 for them.  When I got to stand in the hen house and see some hens in their nests and see others outside scratching in the dirt for bugs and they all just looked very healthy and content, I thought Oh yeah, this is what I want to be paying for.  Not for chickens raised in tiny little cages and all that.

Well around here we just stop and ask or find out word of mouth.  Or if you know someone who drives them places they might be able to tell who to check with.

The most I have ever paid for eggs has been $2.50 a dozen.  I have gotten fresh butter, milk, bread and of course veggies and fruit.  There is a Mennonite about 2 miles from me that grows Canary melons and they are wonderful.  I had never heard of them before but they talked me into trying one and now I'm in love.

I also haven't seen any on them have them any other way then free range.  Usually you see them running around the yard.  That actually might be a good way to find someone too, if they have chickens and dairy cows I'm sure they have the eggs and milk.  You won't know until you ask if they will sell it but most of them around here will if you ask.

Good job, Kelly!  I would take care with raw milk myself.  I'm very clean with everything and I still want to heat that milk to 180 degrees - just to be safe.  One tail swish during milking can put bacteria in the milk.

I could heat it myself before I use it.  From what I've been reading, though, there is actually "good bacteria" in milk that will typically kill small amounts of "bad bacteria"

Home raised cage free eggs are the BEST! I am very fortunate that my best friend raises chickens and she gives me 4 doz at a time and rarely will take any money for them. They taste much better and I know exactly what they eat and the condtions the roam. She has showed me pics of these big chicken factories and it is a horrible site. The only thing she has told me is that the fresh eggs she gives me don't peel well when boiled because they are so fresh and aren't sitting in storage somewhere. I haven't tried it, but I buy eggs to hardboil.

I'm going to wait a few days before I boil any.

Yeah, the chicken factories are terrible.  I watched a documentary about it and it actually made me cry.  I can't understand how it is legal to treat animals that way but apparently most laws about cruelty to animals do not apply to animals that you raise for food.  If you plan to eat it, you can treat it however you want.

I have friends with chickens. My spouse wanted a chicken coop but I put my foot down. I have enough critters to look after. We can also get them at the farmer's market.
I think they do taste better and the yolks cook up bigger. I will pay a premium price for them.

I probably have enough critters to look after too.  Actually all I have at the moment is three cats, which is not very many critters at all for me.  At one point I had three cats, two ferrets, a hamster, two lizards and a frog.  I told people I lived in a zoo.
