A question for all RNY'ers

I am getting close to my surgery date and I am extremely nervous about
the pureed stage. If anyone would like to share what they eat on a typical
day, I would greatly appreciate it. I know they want me to eat 4-5 small meals
a day. I am lost to what I should cook or eat and I don’t want to end up eating
soup and mash potatoes for 6 weeks.

You're supposed to do pureed foods for six weeks?  Wow, that's a long time.

Let's see, I ate yogurt, sugar free pudding, mashed potatoes, applesauce, refried beans, ricotta cheese... maybe that's it.  But I only did pureed for one week.  And I did protein shakes, of course.

I didn't have a problem with pureed (3 weeks)
- boiled shrimp, grilled/roasted chicken, ground beef, broiled fish, "fried" egg (with Pam instead of grease) Most of of these things I added a little greek yogurt to keep it moist, some I added melted cheese to

- steamed squash, cooked carrots

Texture doesn't bother me, but if I wanted a "crunch" I kept plenty of sugar free popsicles on hand (still do - I LOVE them).
Develop your discipline in this stage, no matter how much you may want to move forward, follow your surgeon's plan!

Are you meeting with a nutriontist before your surgery?  For us it's a separate appointment we have to attend before Pre-Op and then we meet up with her again Post-Surg and I was told they come to visit while we are in hospital too.

My surgery is Oct 17, but my NUT visit is Sept 28.
You may want to check with your Surgeon's office about this and what literature they are going to give you because from what I've seen on the site, there are all kinds of different suggestions by different surgeons.  They have you add foods at different times from what I've seen.

Although there are some GREAT ideas from the Vets that have had the surgery too!  So I imagine they will have additional advice.

I had to do pureed for 6 weeks then they changed my appt and I had to do it for 7 weeks.. it sucked! I ate tons of cottage cheese, cream soup, yogurt, refried beans, pudding.. I had tons of lobster Bisque.. yummy.  I wasn't interested in food so it wasn't too horrible but having more choices would have been nice.  I tried to stay away from things like mashed pots because of the lack of protein.. I did have them a few times but it's really important to not fill up on that stuff and get your protein in.  You will do fine, good luck!

Egg salad, tuna salad, chicken salad, shrimp salad, yogurt, cream soups and regular soups pureed. There are lots of things you just have to think differently. The important part here is that it be mushy and noting big to get stuck. Like egg salad for exampl...if you chew well you do not have to blend. I never pureed anything, i just chewed really well. It take so long to eat now that it becomes a habit. I go to regular food next week and am a little nervous. I will add things slowly.  Good Luck!!

I used to love cottage cheese and tuna salad until I ate them post-RNY during the puree period.  That cured me from ever wanting them again.  I think it was more of a texture issue for me.  I have to say this stage was the worst for me.  I mainly did protein drinks and pureed carrots, squash, peaches (all fruit packed in water), etc.  Sugar Free popsicles were good too for fluids!

I'm currently in the pureed stage...and it has its ups and downs.  The good part is that honestly...if I didn't HAVE to eat...I wouldn't miss it.  I'm not hungry...food really itsn't appealing, my tastebuds are outta wack and I literally have to look at my watch and say "you need to eat something" otherwise I wouldn't.

The my personal menu isn't all that limited....anything that I can put in the blender is now pureed!  My surgeon's rules are no seeds, nuts, bread, pasta, rice, and raw fruits and veggies.  He doesn't want anything irriating the staple line (seeds and nuts) or anything that will bulk up as you eat it (bread rice pasta) or that's hard to digest (the raw fruits and veggies).

Today, this is what I'm eating:

Cheese sticks wrapped in smoked turkey breast
tuna salad
greek yogurt
apple sauce
SF popcicles (when I get home)
protein shake (when I get home)

I also eat a lot of cottage cheese mixed with mashed bananas, high fiber/high protein oatmeal, scrambled eggs with cheese, refried beans w/ sour cream and cheese, canned tuna and salmon, boiled eggs, and mashed sweet potatoes.

Its not the greatest thing in the world...but it's not horrible.  Remember, you're not going to be hungry or even want food...so eating is kind of a chore (at least for me it is).
