I think I broke my toe

I think it actually looks worse than it feels.  Unless I try to bend it.  Then it HURTS.

It really just depends what type of fracture or break it is. Certain types have to be reset, and I have even seen doctors write an RX (anti-biotic) for certain types of fractures.

It is hard to say if you should actually go or not. It is true that there is nothing that can be done about most toe fractures, but it is impossible to know without an x-ray. I work in an urgent care, and most urgent cares have an x-ray machine. The co-pay is much smaller than the ER, and the wait time is usually a lot shorter.

while there is not much they can do with most fractures, there are some fractures that may even require surgery. i would recommend that you at least go to urgent care and get an x-ray, especially if the pain is getting worse.

hope it feels better.

I limped around with a broken toe for 2 weeks.  Even wore an orthopedic boot but was in agony.  Finally went to a podiatrist and he showed me the x-ray.  A piece of bone had chipped off and worked its way into the joint space.  I had to have surgery to have that little piece of bone pulled and screwed back into place.  Off work for 6 weeks!  So don't wait too long!

I emailed my mother, who works for an orthopedic surgeon.  She said they usually don't do anything for broken toes unless the bone is badly displaced.  She said if I can bend it, even if it hurts, then it is probably not badly displaced.  She also said if I run my fingers along the bone, I could probably feel it if it was displaced.  I don't know what it would feel like, but apparently I would know it if I felt it.  So I think it is OK even if it is broken.

the pain isn't getting worse as long as I don't wiggle my toe or walk on it much.  If it seems to be getting worse, I will go get it xrayed.  Thanks.

I broke all four of the smaller toes on one foot once.  They couldn't do anything for me except pain meds and crutches.  It was awful.  I know that if it happened to me again NOW, (knowing what I know now) I wouldn't waste a trip to the ER.  BUT, I am not a doctor and have no business giving out any sort of medical advice.

I hope you feel better soon.   I'm sorry this happened to you.

Still hurts a lot to move it but it actually looks better today.  Still a little swollen but not as much.  The bruise doesn't seem as big, either.

Yeah, the bread machines are big.  And HEAVY.  I don't know how I dropped it.

Kelly, I would err on the side of caution this one and get it checked.  I had some foot pain post-op that turned out to be a stress fracture in my left foot.  I got it diagnosed maybe 2 weeks post-op and have been dealing with it since.  It all started out as pain in my right foot.... from banging my foot on the hospital bed that I was almost too tall for.  When walking and trying to shift my weight to the opposit foot.... bam, the good foot now became the bad foot.  So, just take it easy and get it checked.  This has been a NIGHTMARE that I couldn't have imagined would feel as bad as it does and I don't wi**** on anyone... friend or foe.
