Feeling so guilty.

The last few days I've just been making not great choices. It was my anniversary and I overall made some good choices. I had beef stew and filet mignon and non fat frozen yogurt as a dessert. But I also made bad choices that I just feel so bad about. I had potatoes au gratin, a couple glasses of champagne, some wedding cake because it was our 1 year anniversary, and a taco from qdoba with a white flour tortilla. I wish I didn't feel so guilty. Also the scale has gone up a couple lbs over the last few days and I know ti is probably just fluctuation because I'm not going over 1000 calories a day and I've been walking a lot but I feel like I'm just doing a horrible job.

What's your goal here?  I don't mean a goal weight, but are you trying to eat perfectly all the time?  Is your goal to never eat cake or something made with white flour?  Or is your goal to eat an overall healthy diet and be healthy and enjoy life?

If your goal is to eat perfectly all the time, I still don't think you're doing a horrible job but you're not quite there yet.  Unfortunately, I doubt you'll ever get there.  People aren't perfect.  We just aren't.  So you probably won't be, either.

If your goal is to eat reasonably healthy stuff and enjoy life, then I think you're doing fine.  Eating some cake on your one year anniversary won't make you fat (unless you are getting divorced and remarried A LOT, and if that's the case, you have bigger problems than your weight to worry about!).

I think I am having a hard time finding a middle between being perfect and being HORRIBLE. I am scared I am going to go all the way to horrible. The balance is just SO hard. So may people don't let themselves have a lot of carbs or white flour or sugar and I can tolerate it all and find myself eating it. Not ALL the time but some of the time.

I think a lot of us have trouble finding the middle ground.  Before surgery, if I decided I was going on a diet but then ate one bite of something I thought I shouldn't, I would then decide I'd ruined the diet and that I might as well go eat all the junk I could stuff in my stomach.  If the only choices we give ourselves are to be perfect or to be HORRIBLE, then I think we are setting ourselves up for horrible.  Because we just aren't going to be perfect.

So for today, how about letting yourself choose "good enough" instead of perfect or horrible?

Well, don't you think?  If you are having a one year wedding anniversary every few days, something is wrong and it's not the fact that you eat cake!

Yeah, that would totally be an issue!  It was just funny....You know I love the way you put stuff!  You remind me of Dr. Phill, but way smarter then him!  He can be annoying, but has a way of putting stuff that just makes sense.

I like how Dr. Phil always asks people "And how's that working for you?"  I used to run anger management groups and I starting using that line.  I always hoped my clients didn't realized I'd learned it from Dr. Phil, though.

Happy Anniversary! The good news is that tomorrow is a brand new day. Some potatoes, champagne, cake and a taco won't kill you. Not a great idea to eat like that every day but once in a blue moon - that's normal. For me, this surgery was the start of a lifestyle choice not a diet. My lifestyle involves alcohol on special occassions, a bite of cake once in a while and some starchy evils every now and then. That's how my thin friends eat - mostly healthy choices with a sprinkling of random no-no's every now and then.

You're doing fine.. just don't let today represent every day or even often days and you'll be fine.

Nope, that is not horrible.  The scale is going up because some of the stuff you are eating is high in salt and you are retaining water.

I think you should stop feeling guilty and from this point make choices you feel better with.  Can't go back and change what you ate, you can only control how you proceed.  If you have not had dinner yet, start there.  Have a great RNY dinner of all protein with some veggies.  Jump back to basic tomorrow and just move on.  You had an anniversary and you had a good time.  It is going to happen....you have your whole life ahead of you.  In the past, on diets, when you eat "bad" you felt guilty.  Did that work for you?  Probably not since we ended up with RNY surgery.

New Habits are key.  When you feel like you are going off course, don't feel guilty cause you are allowed to eat a taco, and a piece of cake, just not everyday.  So just get back on track.  That is probably something we did not do before surgery that we can do now.

Did you try on a pair of 12 pants yet today?  You should go do that if you have some, I bet they would fit and make you feel better.
