Well, here's what I've found after doing a little googling.

It seems several sources agree that the high amount of phytic acid in soybeans can inhibit the absorption of calcium, magnesium, copper, iron and zinc.  However, none that I read actually explained how the phytic acid does this.

I saw a couple other sources that mentioned vitamins E, K, D and B12 but didn't explain why soy would interfere with those.  I think one was actually just saying that soy products don't contain B12 the way animal products do and that even if they add B12 to the soy milk or whatever it's not absorbed very well.

I didn't see anything that was directly aimed at RNY folks, but I didn't look super hard for it either.

I think what I will do (and I am not suggesting anyone else should do this, unless they feel it would be in their best interests) is continue getting my labs done every six months like I always do and pay specially close attention to these lab results.  I get all of those things checked every time I get my labs done so not only will I know if they are within normal limits, I will know if they drop even a little bit.  If I notice a drop, I will increase my supplementation.  If something continues to drop even with added supplementation, I will re-evaluate.

Hi Kelly! I read alot of your posts and find them very helpful, do you mind me asking why you are cutting dairy out of your diet? I'm kind of in the same process of cutting out dairy due to what I suspect is lactose intolerance.

I'm happy to share.  I just want to say first that I'm suggesting this is what everyone should do, it's what I feel is right for me.

I've been a vegetarian for about 25 years but continued eating eggs and dairy because I thought that laying eggs would not harm chickens and giving milk would not hurt cows.  My main reason for becoming a vegetarian was ethical concerns, it wasn't about health, although I think there are some health benefits to a vegetarian diet.  I think it's absolutely possible to eat meat and still be eating a healthy diet, though.  And it has never bothered me if other people eat meat, I just don't want to eat it.  I also won't cook it because it grosses me out.  My partner eats meat, but mostly just when we go out to eat.  If he wants it at home, he has to cook it himself and he doesn't like to cook much.

Anyway, I don't know why it took me 25 years to figure this out, but I've recently learned just how bad chickens are cows are usually treated while being kept to give milk or eggs.  I watched one documentary about chickens that actually made me cry.  So I decided that I was going to try to find a place nearby (I live in a rural area) that I could buy eggs from a small farm, where the chickens would be treated better.  And I have found a place to get eggs from.

I would like to find a place I could buy milk but have not been able to find one yet.  If I do, I will probably keep using real milk although soy milk may be cheaper and I can get it at my grocery store when I'm doing my regular shopping instead of having to drive for 30  minutes like I do to get the eggs.  I do not know yet what I'm going to do about other dairy products.  I eat a lot of cheese and a lot of yogurt.  There is soy cheese but it's very low in protein.  There is soy yogurt too but the ones I have seen are much higher in calories and sugar than the yogurt I usually buy.  I have been told by a few people that is really is not hard to make your own yogurt so I might try that.  I am not trying to make my own cheese, though!  I think I'm just gonna have to stop eating cheese, or at least eat a lot less of it.

I LOVE Soy Slender Chocolate, and my store used to carry Cappuccino flavor but no more.... darn!  I should have tried it while they had it.  I bet Cappuccino soy milk would be deeeelish with chocolate protein powder!   :)

I had my RNY at Mayo Clinic...by the top gastric surgeon in the country.  I still travel to Mayo for all my NUT appointments and labs.  My NUT encouraged me to drink soy milk...I'm lactose intolerant since surgery.  She never mentioned ANYTHING about it being harmful to folks who have had RNY.

The Cappucino Soy Milk is AWESOME....It's really good warmed in the microwavr with a little SF whipped cream on top...sprinkled witha little grated nutmeg....YUMMM!
