pepcid ac question
my sugury is tuesday and i know we have to take pepcid ac or prilosec for one month after surgury. I went to buy pepcid ac chewables at Walgreens and was told by the pharmacist that they have been discontnued. I cannot take prilosec. they had a walgreens chewable brand but the only thing it does have 800 mg of calcium cabonate in it. Does anyone know if you can take this chewable pill with the calcium carbonate in it along with your 1500 mg of calcium citrate? I left a message on the np phone around 4 today and i havent heard anything. thanks.
p.s. does anyone know how to go to your profile and add things to your signature. i cant figure out how to do it. thanks again.

My doc said not to take anything with calcium carbonate.
There are a couple of Pepcid products out there.
Pepcid AC Complete contains both Pepcid and an antacid (whi*****ludes calcium carbonate). This is not what your doctor was recommending you to take when he said you should take Pepcid AC
Pepcid AC Chewables have been discontinued.

Are you sure they are Pepcid AC chewables and not pepcid complete chewables? Pepcid AC chewables WERE discontinued about 6 months ago. I miss them very much, I used them all the time. I have asked pharmacists in CVS, walgreens, walmart and private drug stores and they all said the same thing - no more Pepcid AC chewables. I actually asked walmart just last week.
Maybe your walmart still had some on the shelves from prior to the recall and ultimate discontination. I would check the expiration date.

early postops that can't swallow pills for the first month, need to take the pepcid AC chewables in place of a PPI until they can swallow pills. No, they aren't as strong - my surgeon had me take 2 extra stregth chewables 2 times per day until I could go back on my protonix.
I continued to use them once in awhile if I ate something citrus or highly acidic. Helped the stomach pain and the chewables work must faster than the pills. I miss them

The pepcid AC chewables have been discontinued - I have been trying to get them for months. Your only other option is to get a PPI - prilosec, prevacid or nexium and open the capsule and put the inside stuff in applesauce, yogurt once you can have that.
As far as the pepcid complete, you can't take it with your calcium citrate - that gives you too much calcium. You might want to talk to your surgeon about taking the pepcid complete for 2 weeks or so until you can have applesauce and not take your calcium citrate for 2 weeks. calcium carbonate won't hurt you for 2 weeks, you just don't want it long term but taking the acid supresser is much more important to avoid ulcers and reflux to protect your healing pouch.
You mentioned only taking Prilosec for 1 month, please dont' stop at 1 month. YOu need to take it for atleast 6months to a year. YOu will have a new healing pouch that needs protecting. ANytime I hear postops stopping there PPI's too soon, it is when they writing about the severe ulcers they have and are having trouble getting them to heal. Please protect your pouch.
