questions about soy milk

I use BlueDiamond unsweetened vanilla almond milk for my protein shakes/smoothies and also for my hot protein lattes.  I've also tried coconut, but like the almond milk better.

I've never tried baking with it - I stay away from baking as it just makes me want to eat more.

I do still use unflavored greek yogurt.  I agree with you about cows (and other livestock) treatment, use of hormones, processing, etc.  I do get grass fed beef, chicken and eggs.  I'm trying to find a source for raw butter, but so far no luck.

Sometimes I just have to do the best I can when I can.  I try to eat raw, fresh, unprocessed.  I do eat cheese - mostly Sargento Provolone slices and Baby bel.  I also eat cottage cheese.  I'm not a farmer and don't have access to "pure" sources without hormones, pesticides, corn fed, etc.

I've been going to a food co-op and finding some choices there.

Best wishes.

Where do you get your eggs?  There is a company called Egglands Best that sells eggs I can buy in my local grocery store and they are advertised as "cage free" but I just spoke with one of their customer service reps today and as far as I can tell, the chickens are treated just as poorly as the ones kept in cages.  They are kept in a large room indoors, instead of in small cages, but that's the only difference.  They have no access to the outdoors, artificial lighting is manipulated to make them lay more eggs than they normally would, they cut their beaks so they don't peck each other to death (which they only do when kept in very stressful, unnatural conditions), etc.  I found a local farmer that sells free range eggs, though.

So far I have been unable to find a place near me to purchase raw milk but when I see the farmer to get the eggs (and to take a tour of the farm) I will ask him if he knows of anywhere I could get milk.  It's my understanding that some people that sell raw milk don't advertise it because governmental agencies sometimes frown upon it.

My daughter in law gets the eggs for me when she gets the raw milk.  They "own" a cow and can get the milk that way.

We also live with Amish near us and we sometimes get chicken & eggs from them, local.  Our food co-op (30 minutes away) sells organic eggs, also local, from chickens that are allowed "freedom".  I used to use Eggland eggs, but the yolks of the free range chickens is such a deep yellow and has a better taste.

I eat a boiled egg almost every day in my salad at noon.

After I watched the DVD, "Food, Inc." I just couldn't tolerate the inhumane treatment, drugs & unsanitary conditions that mass chicken farms use.  It made me nauseaous.

If I knew everything that is done to "distort" food from it's natural state, I'd probably be dumbfounded!

There is a large Amish population near me as well and I imagine I can find someone to get raw milk from.  I just haven't found them yet.

I was looking at soy yogurt in the store today and now I've already forgotten what brand it was but they only had two flavors and I was going to get one to try but it has 150 calories and 21 grams of sugar in six ounces!  I am used to eating carbmaster with 60 calories and 3 grams of sugar.  That's just not going to work for me.

I did however find cappucino flavored soy milk at the store!  I can't wait to try that.  I'm thinking that could be really good in a protein shake.

I love the almond milk.... but I use the Hood Low Carb milk more regularly for the protein. Unfortunately, for your cause, it is actual dairy.

I won't eat veal due to the conditions a young cow must endure to become veal.... have not looked to deeply into the milk situation though.

Yeah... I hadn't looked into it much either, until just lately.  I came across a book that addressed that issue, as well as the issue of eggs, and then just happened to come across a documentary online about eggs.  And once you know, well, you can't ever go back to not knowing.  You know?

The dairy cows are typically not treated much better than the veal callves.  It's much worse than I'm sure most people imagine.  It's much worse than I imagined.  And the egg issue... seeing these chickens would seriously make you cry.

The book is Diet for a New America by John Robbins, who is actually related to the Robbins of Baskin-Robbins ice cream.  He was in line to take over the company but decided not to because he did not want to be involved in the dairy industry.  I'm actually done with my company, I'll send it to you if you like.

Here is the link to the documentary.  topdocumentaryfilms.com/wegmans-cruelty/  Don'****ch it while you're eating.
