Anyone here told they need 5000 mg calcium?

I don't know.  It does seem odd.  And I hadn't even considered how hard it would be to actually get that much calcium in since we can only absorb about 500 mg at a time.  5000 mg would mean taking TEN doses a day.  And in order to take them two hours apart, it would take 20 HOURS to get all your calcium.  Then you'd need to wait two more hours to take your iron.  So if you wanted more than about two hours of sleep a night, you'd have to set an alarm to wake you every two hours to take vitamins.

Surgeon said 1500 and must be calcium citrate. 5000 is crazy.

My surgeon said 1500mg calcium citrate per day, and to only take 1/3 at a time for better absorption.

Hi Kelly,

I was told 1500mg of calcium citrate. I have a hard enough time getting that in with everything else, especially now i'm having to take extra iron.

UGH!  That poster was infuriating!  I honestly think that he is very confused and uneducated about his vitamin decisions.  I was giving him the benefit of the doubt until he denied the fact that we can only absorb so much calcium at one time.  I think you are completely in the right here, Kelly!

I really like my surgeon but he and the nutritionist told me to eat Tums and take Flintstones vitamins.
I learned about Calcium Citrate here.
Because of y'all I take the correct calcium and proper vitamins now.

Yep.  I'm supposed to get in 4000mg/day.  Don't always quite make it, but usually am able to get close.

Why?  What's up?

Nothing's up really, just someone kept insisting that almost all docs recommend 5000 mg calcium a day, so I was wondering if somehow docs had suddenly changed what they normally recommend.  Apparently he was mistaken, most docs are still recommending far less than 5000 mg.

My reply should have said 5000 mg. Sorry for any confusion.  We have not discussed what I will need after surgery. Sorry I can't be of more help.
