Just a quick question.  Anyone here told by their doc or dietician that they need 5000 mg calcium a day?  Or even told they need 3000 mg?

No, my surgeon didn't even recommend the minimum 1500.  He said 1200.  I do the 15.

I was asking about after surgery, though.  I realize I didn't make that clear.  Did your surgeon explain that you would need 1500-2000 mg calcium citrate after surgery?  And explain that you will need calcium citrate, not calcium carbonate?

Well, it's a lot more than the ASMBS recommends.  But someone has insisted that "most groups" recommend 5000 mg, so I thought I'd ask around and find out if that was correct and if so, why they were recommending so much more than the ASMBS recommends.

That is a crazy number.  Even if you took the Citrical Max at 600mgs per dose, you'd need to take them 8 times a day at 2 hour intervals and that would leave little time for the iron in your multi and any supplemental iron you are taking.  Unless you set your alarm to wake you every few hours. In my opinion, any doctor *****commends that, even though the ASMBS states clearly in their recommendations that we need 1500-2000mgs, is a QUACK!

It's pretty unrealistic considering how constipating 1500 mg is.  Years ago my dr. told me to take 1000 mg a day, the first 500 for the bones and the second to plug me up (sort of kidding).

5000 - I'd need dynamite to poop.

Seems like that would be a lot- you would have to be taking them all day long too.

I was told 1,500-2,000

I was told to take 6 of the 630mg (with 500 IU of D) tablets a day totaling 3780mg a day.  You mean I don't actually have to take that much!?!?  That's it.  I'm cutting out two a day.  YAY for two less pills.
