Caffeine/CLICK Protein
So I am scheduled to have surgery on Friday (WooHoo!!!) and on my two week liquid diet and I just tried the CLICK protein powder and is is SO SO GOOD!!! I called my best friend who is having surgery a couple of weeks after me and she reminded me I can't have caffeine. Boo! So then I called my surgeon who stated I should never have caffeine AGAIN! NEVER AGAIN! What the HECK!
So my question to you all is...
Do you drink caffeine?
So my question to you all is...
Do you drink caffeine?
I do... just not all the time.
I see no reason to avoid all caffeine forever. What is your surgeon's reasoning for that recommendation?
I see a number of reasons not to drink a lot of caffeine, though. It can interfere with the absorption of some minerals that we need. It may contribute to the development of ulcers. In large amounts, it acts as a diuretic, meaning that even if we are drinking a lot we are more prone to things like dehydration.
At home, I drink a lot of decaf iced tea. At restaurants and places like that, though, you can almost never get decaf iced tea so I drink regular. At home I use decaf coffee in protein drinks. When I visit my sister, though, she doesn't buy decaf coffee and I just use regular. I don't think the occassional caffeine I get hurts me in any way.

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor. Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me. If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her. Check out my blog.
I use CLICK in the mornings and it is one of the few protien drinks I can get down. My surgeon did not want me using caffeine for the first few weeks of healing, because the action of the caffeine on healing tissue is not great, plus as Kelly said, it can contribute to ulcers. I drink a additional glass of water per caffinated drink. I have several friends who drink caffeine with no difficulty. I am a caffiene addict and I used to drink just about a case of diet coke a day. I try to limit my caffiene to 1-2 drinks a day. Like Kelly, I also drink decaf tea. Good luck with your surgery and I am sure you are going to hear from a lot of caffeine folks out there!!!

I am a coffee addict. I did go off before surgery and didnt start drinking any until July of this year. I asked my Dr at the last visit and he said he was ok with me having a couple of cups a day
Whew. I was doing ok without, but stayed a week at my girlfriends and started back to drinking it. Dang it. Oh well Dr said try not to have much more because of the problems with ulcers. Soooo I am drinking my coffee every morning.
Good luck. I think like most things, it should be in moderation.

The ASMBS says to "avoid/delay in moderation" caffeine. So, I wouldn't have any until you're way out and well healed. When is that? I guess that would be up to you, your doctor, and your nutritionist. Personally, I'm trying to avoid it as long as possible even though I do miss it! If we can't eat "regular" foods until 8 weeks out I guess I would say that is the earliest but I would still wait longer to decrease your chances of complications.
I stopped caffeine cold turkey about 2 weeks prior to surgery, which stunk! But good thing to do, I wasn't allowed any in the hospital. Didn't start back up until about 3 months after surgery because I was afraid it would irritate my pouch. Now I have 2 Clicks a day...sometimes an iced coffee every once in awhile and don't have any problems.
