Have any of you experienced this and if so, what did you transfer it to?

The only addiction I have ever had is to cigarettes - I smoked from the age of 14 and gave up several times, only to start up again, sometimes years later.

I last gave up in December 2003 and haven't had a cigarette since - I DO know that one cigarette and I would be back on a pack a day that same day ...

I never considered myself addicted to food and have not had any transfers since my surgery in 2004. I don't believe that transfer addictions are inevitable, just as I don't believe that all people who have/had WLS are addicted to food.

I agree.  I don't think it's inevitable for everyone.  I think it is based on your personality.  I believe mine was an addiction and now I think I AM transferring it somewhere else.  I really think I need a therapist.

Good for you in recognising a potential problem - therapy is a great idea - good luck!

It is a good thing you are self aware and acknowledge you probably need a therapist.

I was/am addicted to food. I have yet to transfer thankfully. I actually just made my first therapy appointment.

I think since you know you are transfering to something else this early out you maybe able to stop it?

I'm still fighting cigarettes.  Went 7 days without then had one, ugh.  Back in the process of trying to rid myself of them forever.

Have to agree with Kim on the cigs, one leads to wanting more and more.  It's by far the hardest thing I've ever done.

I used the patch to quit smoking.  I swear by it....I never thought I would ever be a non smoker and I totally am now.  I actually now think the smell is sick and the thought of even doing it just gags me and as a smoker you know....we love to smoke and the smell and jus****ching others makes us want to.  All of that went away, it took a few years but it did.

If you have not tried the patch, give it a go....it rocks!

Lisa, I was doing the patch that's why I didn't smoke for 7 days I really do believe it helped.  I threw the dang cigarettes away (after breaking them to pieces) and I'm going to buy some more patches this afternoon.  I AM stubborn and felt I should be able to do it this week without; nope I proved to myself I need the help.

I'm bound and determined to stop smoking.  I can't wait to be one of those ex-smokers that can't stand the smell or to be around anyone that smokes.

You will do it!  You really can!  It seems impossible, but it is possible.

If the patch ends up not working for you, which it sounds like it will cause it did, I have heard that Wellburtin works too.  I even tried it years before I quit, and like you it worked but I thought "I don't need this" and of course went right back to smoking.

I will tell you this too, take everyday as a new day.  If you slip and smoke, wake up the next day and start over.  I slipped up a few times on my journey, but just kept going.  Also, evaluate your life, figure out what times you really enjoy smoking ie: driving, talking on the phone, right after a meal, before bed....so on.  Find something else to do in those times....anything.  But those are the times when it will be the worst!

Oh I just wish you the best of luck!  It is so hard but SOOO worth it!
